'Woodpecker' noise coming from C3

Post by Andy F »

Good Morning.

I am after some advice about my mother in laws C3 1.4 HDi sx. She brought it around to me this last night complaining about a woodpecker type noise coming from behind the dash board.

She says it occurs about 5 minutes into pretty much every journey and is quite loud. This to me sounded like a heater flap moving once the engine had got warm enough to make the cabin warm.

It has single zone climate control. I was able to make it make the noise a few times by pressing the auto button. Does it have similar plastic cogs to the C5 system? is it easy to get at?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received. p.s putting bird seed in the ash tray didn't work, nor go down very well...

There are 3 servo's that control the heating system/direction, they're located on the o/s of the heater box assembly (in the drivers footwell), in my experience its usually the servo which controls the direction of the heat (output) that usually fails, to test this run the engine & try operating the 'direction' control of the heating system, to be honest it's not uncommon for them to behave after the vehicle has been running for a while, when you operate the switch you'll need to have your fingers touching the relevant servo, when it makes this odd noise you'll also feel the servo clicking abnormally.
Music keeps me going.
