Warranty on Genuine Spare parts?

Post by CitroJim »

Is there a warranty on spares obtained from a main stealer?

I ask as my rear Activa Ram (see full tale of woe here) has sprung rather a major LHM leak..

Thing is, this ram was brand, spanking new less then a year ago and since fitting, the car has travelled less then 3,000 miles.

For something that cost £403 and has lasted less then a year, this is not good.

I'm going to ask the stealer about a warranty but looking at their Ts and Cs on the back of the invoice suggests that duff parts found immediately must be notified in seven days and those parts that fail in service are covered for 28 days...

I'd have thought there would have been a much longer warranty underwritten by Citroen on parts but the invoice remains silent on that...

Any thoughts?

Doesn't everything have to have a years warranty by law?
Also there is the 'fit for purpose' clause.
An item like that should be expected to last for several years.

I have noticed that there is a disclaimer in our local dealer that electronic parts cannot be returned (I was buying an aircon controller at the time, had me worried) but that still doesn't void the warranty.

Consumer law states that puchases should last a "reasonable" time, irrespective of warranty (which is just an agreement from the retailer that you won't have to take them to court if something goes wrong within that time).

Given that a new Activa would have come with what? 3 years warranty? Then it'd be hard for them to suggest that 6 months usage is reasonable for a RAM.

So if the dealer refuses, try Citroen UK, then it's off to the small claims court

Oh Jim no! they do have a minimum one years warrantee, this is why you buy superior "genuine parts".
I would just go back to the dealer and let them know whats happened and say you want a new one, end of.
No point threatening court action, they have to replace it, simple as that.

Just a shame the warrantee doesnt cover labour  .

A word of warning though, they may try to fob you off if they discover you fitted it, missuse could be an issue as they dont kow you from adam and as far as they are concearned you could of dragged the part home, and thrown it out of the upstairs window half a dozen time before fitting it.

What is on your side is the fact this is a common mode of faillure so there should be no problem in getting a new one.

I had an exceedingly favourable initial chat with the parts department today.

I'm off to natter with them face to face tomorrow afternoon and hopefully the news will be good...

Didnt think you would have any trouble jim...........do you have to return the old one? or do you show them the leaky one on the car and just say you will chuck it away after you swap them if thats ok
Would be a favourable outcome that would take the sting out of your labour as its only the return boot thats leaking where it seats against the metal casing isnt it?

They don't even want to see the car yet but I shall take a photo with me...

If I get a new one (they're not NFP :D) and get to keep the old one than result!

I'm going to have to go down the replacement ram route soon I think...

I sent my Activa in for MOT on Saturday to be told by the MOT tester that both of the Activa rams have fluid dripping from them.

This is irritating as the car has only just ticked over 50k miles.

I'm seriously thinking of approaching Glasgow Citroen and asking them for a group buy discount and seeing what they'll offer for buying 5 fronts and 5 rears.

Anyone interested in a ram?

David.

Try a repair first David...

Full details here.

You have a well-equipped workshop haven't you?

£12 for XM gaiters against possibly in excess of £800 for new rams makes it worth it to take a chance on a repair...
