Apolagies (Not a Citroen) Has anyone owned a Mk3 Cavalier?

Post by falling-out-with-my-car »

Hi, again appolagies for it not being a Citroen, but the cavalier website is being a bit vague in recommending checking a relay with no explannation
in how to test the relay.
the fault lies within the ABS system on a 1995 vauxhaul cavalier mk 3 saloon. they say check the surge arrestor relay. but any further info isnt forthcomming.

i thought perhaps maybe someone on here might have owned one sometime in the past and maybe have had resonable mechanical knowledge of them, I have changed camshafts replaced rings and bottom end bearings in older Mk2 cavaliers but never seen a fault in the ABS systems.

they were once a very popular motor.

any guidance would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you in advance Nigel.

I've had 3 MK3 Cavaliers and never had to perform this check, so not sure how to do it.
Shame I've recently got rid of the haynes manual that I had as this could have possibly helped.

Actually being a citroen owner I thought might ease the situation a bit.

anyway it wasnt my idea to ask on here it never crossed my mind
until someone else said it might be possible that someone on here might have owned one with abs in the past.

unfortunately the haynes book of lies is exactly that.

apparently the ABS box that contains the relays is a sealed unit but I was wondering if there might be a way to test the abs system with a meter or at least test the sensors at the wheels, my Dad was telling me that on citroens the wiring plug that connects to the ABS relay box has numbers inside the plug and these numbers relate to each wiring loom on each wheel enabling you to use a meter to test each sensor individually.

regards Nigel.

I owned a Cavalier Mk3 Hatchback. It was an L reg which makes it 1993. I've still got the Haynes manual.

Always worth a shot. No doubt Jim will be along soon and could give some advice.
I must have been lucky with my vauxhalls (owned 6 in total, 3 of the Cav's as already stated) as I never had to test the ABS.
Had every other "common fault" though.

In my Cavalier Haynes manual it says there are junction connectors in the ABS wiring in each wheel arch. Maybe you can test the sensors by splitting these. All 4 should have the same resistance.

I shamefully confess I once owned a MK3 K plate 1.8 Cavalier.

I completely wore it out towing a big caravan with it and the then missus finished it off by not realising the water pump had gone until the heater stopped working...

The only way then to keep coolant in it was to keep the rad cap loose... She traded it in for a F**D Fester and I took custody of our little AX. I had the best of that particular deal, that was for sure...

Can't help with the ABS, ours had no such luxury. It was the poverty-spec special...

I never understand why people name their cars the only name I have ever thought of for mine was when it was upsetting me at some point
I think I used the term SH*Troen, of course there are the old cleshays ford = found-on-rubbish-dump
Bmw=bl*ck-Mans-W*lly
and I always pronounce Volvo backwards ovlov otherwise my citroen goes on the blink. :taz:
