Picasso air bag squib

Post by C.J. »

The air bag light is permanently on on my 2001 Picasso.
I've been told today by a mobile mechanic that it's probably the steering wheel 'squib' that's faulty/broken. Common problem so he says
Approx £200 for a new one apparently, so breakers yard or e bay beckon.

I've been warned however that there are several different ones with their own built in ecu, and to make sure I get a compatible one, or it'll be a waste of time and money.
Didn't think to ask him how I actually go about this before he sped off.

Any ideas anyone, or is he talking twoddle?

I'd get it on a diag computer before getting the spanners out to see what the fault actually is

Edit: I've just come to the realisation that 1st gen Picassos (up to about 2004) are NOT multiplexed 8-) They can be ID by having squared off column stalks, simlar to earlier (eg Xantias) - later multiplexed ones have the rounded stalks of COMS2000 as per MK2 Xsaras etc.

So, assuming that your sparky is talking about the rotary connector behind the wheel, there are only 2 types on early cars - with and without wheel radio controls. Having said that, it is likely that he is in fact referring to later cars fitted with the COMS2000 which is a well known weak point and does cost around £200. Info for early cars:

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT 00004112CP ROTATING SWITCH 115.19 GBP 138.23 GBP 138.23 GBP

00004112X6 ROTATING SWITCH 90.76 GBP 108.91 GBP 108.91 GBP

The more expensive one being the one with radio controls of course....!

If it's anything like the 306's and the Xantia that I just had to fix last week it'll be a dirty connection under one of the front seats.

The 306's used to need the connection under the seat on the orange wire for the seat belt pretensioner cleaning.

The Xantia I did needed the side airbag connection on the passengers side cleaning.
