New to Peugeot 406 ownership

Just bought a '98 406GLX TD Estate with 11 months mot and 124k on the clock for £350 - looks pretty good but it has a rattly single pulley on the cambelt arrangement so it will need a bit of work
Couple of questions - apart from the usual cam belt (probably water pump) fluids and so on what else is there to check ? - any special ?
How difficult is it to chang the cam belt - is it worse that an Xantia (my last car)
and -
What is the dial on the dashboard with a symbol that looks like a shower ?
What does it do and what is it supposed to indicate

Good call regarding water pump , would be sensible to do at the same time.

Regarding difficulty, I would say slightly easier as there's no hydraulic piping in the way. The torque link arrangement is a bit of a pain on the top engine mounting but apart from that, easy.

I'm not sure what dial you mean. The GLX does sometimes have an oil level check (comes on when you switch the ignition on and then goes off a few seconds later or when you start it) , will need to see a picture ideally if you are not sure. You might be able to find one via Google if you do not want to take one yourself.

as Spider says, it IS an oil level indicator. When switching on it gives miles to service, then the 'shower' symbol with dashes or zeros underneath which is a guide to oil level. this symbol also then disappears after a few seconds, and is (I think) replaced by mileage.
