speedo and odometer not working

Post by willy »

Peugeot 406 1.9 TD 1996

the speedo and odometer are not working. They have on occasion suddenly started working but 99% of the time they do not.

What should I look for and is it expensive?

Some useful info here > http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... hp?t=33962

It does apply to the 1.9 too , with the possible exception of the 'box' under the glovebox. :)

Delighted it worked Darren :D

Sadly, that was the only one I had and have no more to offer :(

Scrap yard should provide plenty ;) although its a chance if they work.

Now, the newer shape 306 (post 96) with the BE gearbox (diesels and 1.8 / 2.0 petrols) should share the same sensor as these have electronic speedometers not cables. It may be worth investigating if these would fit and / or work as you might find a few 306's on your travels too.

* goes to compare part numbers *

OK both the 406 with the BE3 and BE4 gearbox and the 306's with both the BE3 and the MA gearbox share the same sensor:

616024

The 406 with the BVM ML box has a different one (I think this is the V6 box) but any newer shape 306 should do too, although best to probably stick to 97 to 99 ideally.

thanks everyone, can you just describe what the sensor looks like 'cause I can't see it in the Haynes.

Sorry to possibly repeat a question but is the same sensor used for the speedo and the odometer?

what about the rev counteris that the same sensor too?

Speedo / odometer is the same as they are a combined unit on pre-multiplexed cars, the mileage is also stored in the BSi on multiplexed cars to stop people 'clocking'

Rev counter gets its feed from the TDC sensor or ECU

This is the only pic I can get quickly as I'm running late, its sat on top of the gearbox, only has a bolt holding it in.

Item (3) , the shield might not be fitted on all models as this is a 306 picture although its the same part number for the 406 too (I did check) ;)
