'99 turbo diesel 406 estate.
Front o/s spring snapped today taking the tyre out too. Luckily was only travelling slowly.
Car is about 1/2 a mile from home and currently un-driveable.
My question is, if i cut the spring off, would i be able to drive 1/2 mile home to complete the repair?
I have everything to do the job, apart from the car, at home.
I dont fancy doing this on the roadside!
I have no way of retrieving the vehicle and no roadside assistance.

Seen this happen a lot,as well as a tyre it normally cuts the flexi brake pipe and ABS sensor lead (if fitted). Why the coil is smaller at the bottom only Peugeot knows? I would think its not a good idea to try and drive it without a spring.I`m sure the tyre will catch on the wing, but there is one way to find out??.1/2 a mile is worth a try,but don`t end up with two damaged tyres.Make sure you change the n/s spring as well.

I'm contemplating a 406 estate to replace the Xantia,I think I'd replace both front springs with aftermarket ones if I get one.
I take it there's never been a service action or recall issued regarding this problem? It's potentially very dangerous indeed.
I might just buy a lower mileage Xantia....

Springs can break on any car that has them though to be fair.
406's do not suffer with many, I think I probably changed half a dozen over say 10 years.
I've never changed one on a 106 though, they seem to never break.
