please help a new boy

Unread post by crazylegs »

I have a 57 plate berlingo enterprise van 1.6hdi engine. the van was running fine and then just died on me . no warnings or noises. its a fuel supply problem. if you squirt a bit of easystart down the filter pipe it fires.
can anyone give me part numbers of the fuel pump( pumps ?) and any ideas where to start. would the pump just stop ? is there a pump in the tank as well as the one on the engine? does the pump need timimng if I replace it?
all help appreciated as my local garage are intent on taking the tank out to investigate the problem ?

Check that the lift pump is running - you should hear it prime the fuel system when you turn on the ignition.

If nothing then smack the bottom of the tank which may get it running but it won't last.

The lift pumps are generally accessible through a port under the rear seat squab, covered with a large plastic disc.

Doesn't the 1.6 not have a pump in the tank, just a priming bulb ...?
Main HP pump on the engine doesn't need timing, but hope you don't have to fork out for one of those.

Yes no lift pump on the 1.6 HDi, Any fault codes ? does the garage have decent diagnostic gear that can read fuel pressure on cranking ? Have they done a leakoff check on the injectors ?

If this is similar to the 1.4 HDi, it may be the plastic supply pipes in the engine bay, I seem to recall they can take air in and do this.

I think they come as a 'set' to fit.

How come the 1.6 does NOT have a lift pump? I thought ALL HDis had to have them as the engine "Pump" is not a pump, more a Rail Pressureizer..

Bosch systems use a low pressure pump. Simens systems don't and have a conventional primer bulb. Well, that's the way it was with earlier systems, not sure who makes the system on 1.6 HDi....

That was the kind of rule of thumb on the DW10 engines but you cant really go by that on the DV4 & DV6 engines as systems are evolving & changing all the time. Bosch, Siemens & Delphi make injection systems for these engines (there may well be others system manufacturers aswell) & most of them dont have electric in tank lift pumps, It depends on what car its fitted to. Models that dont have an electrical in tank lift pump have a mechanical lift pump built into the high pressure pump. General rule of thumb, if it has a had primer bulb it wont have an electric in tank pump.
Saw a fiesta the other day with the DV6 engine in it that did have the electric pump.

the garage had some diagnostics but not a full system. we are a bit rural where i am and its a long tow to the nearest citroen dealer for a full check. my pocket cant stand main dealer prices either. so i am stuck with trial and error. can the fault codes be obtained without special readers, like toyotas ?
if I give the chassis number can anyone check to see what pumps it has?

It's a Bosch injection system without an electric pump in the tank.
