What I found out servicing a BX !

Post by tomsheppard »

Model TGD estate (XUD 9B 1900 N.A. Diesel) Manual, 150,000 miles.
Idle 750 rpm
Change air and fuel filter, the latter being brown, the replacement yellow so I don't know how old it is. The air filter was well used but without oil contamination.
Engine speed 800 rpm.
Change oil and oil filter. A severe and unexpected oil leak, caused by a fractured breather pipe stub on the filter, had caused the oil to be below the minimum by a noticeable amount, so it was urgent! That which was drained still to have a good body and didn't smell bad and the filter was recent, coming off easily with firm hand pressure.
Engine speed now 900 rpm.
Clan oil has clearly freed up the engine and the air and fuel filters helped a bit, too. I'll take it for a good long run over the next couple of days to see how it settles down. Then, maybe I'll have to find out why the idle is so high. NB Touching wood, the car never smokes.
Either way, if the engine turns over faster, I guess it is running more efficiently, so it must be worthwhile. Cost less than Twenty pounds and took twenty minutes. For once it lived up to its slogan!
