If the odometer isnt working either its probably the sender unit faulty

If you're near a Lexia/DIAG owner then a quick diagnostics session wil determine the health of the sender.

It's always worth checking the sender connector. It's in a bit of an exposed position, just above the gearbox final drive housing adjacent to the RH driveshaft.

It is usually the sensor as Jim says, its not very well protected against the elements.

I do seem to recall there's a box on the passenger side around the back of the glovebox area that has something to do with this as well...
Andy.

Andy, yes, I know the box you speak of. I believe though, and I might be way off here, that the box is only fitted to the 406 Executive and SRi with the 2.0 TCT engine and the V6s...

I do recall it being replaced on a few models, but not quite sure what. I do know it was the 'second' substitution item for a broken speedo (sensor on transmission first, then this box)

Actually Jim, thinking about it again, would it be the sensor for the speed sensitive steering ? (not having driven a Xantia for a long time I am not sure) , but the early pre 98 2.1 406's and the V6's had ultra, ultra light steering at very low speed, certainly compared to the other models in the range. I think its partly the control for that. The 2.1's did away with it after about 18 months I think. The PAS pump was different on 97 to 98 models too, different pressure and different rack.

Thanks for that very valuable information Andy :D I must check my lad's 2.1TD 406 although his is likely to be too late for it. So It could well be that box then. I do know that they are reckoned to be very prone to failure and prized greatly when found in a scrapyard.

They're available from dealers as a spare part and were not that expensive a couple of years ago: £45 or so...

The easy way to find out if it has a "black box" (speedo interface) is look at the gear box speed sensor plug, two wires it has one, three wires it has not. It`s always the sensor at fault.

Ahh thanks Oldpug :D That explains the two pin sensor I have on a gearbox rescued from a 406 V6...

If you need one Studsmassive, I therefore have one and no real use to me...
