Diesel car requirments have been met: I bought a C5!

Post by Sid_the_Squid »

Hi All,
As the title suggests I solved my desire for a diesel estate, by buying a C5!.
Yes highly unexpected, I was shocked also

I've bought a diesel, a '02 C5 HDi 110 Estate, sadly only an LX spec, but its very clean inside, and the outsides fairly good condition with only a minor bit of rust bubble on one front wheel arch.

Fair amount of service history including a timing belt change in 2009, and just had a standard service by this garage for selling.

Nothing is faulty, and the ride is really nice, very soft clutch also, engine pulls well.
I'm going to give the car a full service in summer, including all fluids change.

Overall I'm pleased, never even considered a C5 before, but very glad I did. 8-)

Heres an autotrader link if anyone is intersted, ignore the fact the ad says its a 90bhp, I checked under bonnet for the intercoller pipeing, and also DVLA has it recorded as a 110.

Excellent news :D

They are great cars, i hope you like it.

The rust is a bit odd, as they dont rust, might have had a bit of paintwork in that area which might explain it.

Looks a tidy one, though those after market wheel trims are almost criminal!

The LX isnt a bad spec, plus it has AC, which is all you really need. Looks like it misses the larger middle LCD display though, the ride height lights must be in the speedo on that one?

So what's the news with the Green Goblin?
Surely not one of those we take any car as a part-ex?

Yes I noticed the odd potision of the ride hight lights, in the speedo.

The other odd thing is on the revv counter, there is no indication of where the red line is. I assume arround 4500rpm, is this normal?

Yes going to change the wheel trims, do Xantia 15 inch wheels fit a C5? I've got a set of Activa alloys spare which I reckon would look great.

I thought the rust was a bit strange, still its really minor, could get it fixed eaisly I think.

Oh lordy no Andrew, the Green Goblin is not going to be bundled off like that, sadly I will have to sell her in the next few months, that is after she is all fixed, still got that horrible electrical bug.

Yes, the rev counter is normal, no C5s have the red lines on. Ive had my 2.0 110 to almost 5K, but there is little point in reving that high.

Ive seen Xantias wearing C5 wheels, so there should be no reason why Xantias wont fit on the C5.

I didnt realise the LXs don't have a oil temp gauge or charge rate gauge. Interesting. Still, not really needed.

What has been wrong with your V6?

What do you think of it, compared to your previous diesel Xantias?

Random electic bug, which currently has stopped the fuel pump from working, why I dont know.

It started out with an immobiliser fault..
Details here http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... hp?t=33930

I'm only really good with basic car mechanics, no good with electric issues, so shes sitting idle at the moment. Luckily Ive still got my BMW until saturday, when I'm taking delivery of the C5 :)

Ya LX spec is really basic, there isn't even analog climate control a la Xantia, its real old skool manual AC style, still thats enough for me at present. couple of years I'll be able to afford an exclusive again ;)

From the short distance I drove already the C5 ride quality is really soft, much closer to a Hydractive in soft mode than a SX xantia. Its a heavyer car so its unsurprisingly slower than the Xantia HDi, not a hugh amount slower, probably a second or so on the 0-60.
Loved the clutch, much better pedel travel distance than the xantia hydralic clutches, which I have always found to be to high. Gearbox seems higher geared than the Xantia, but that might just be my memory failing, its been a couple of years since I sold my red HDi.

Sounds like you quite like the C5 already, i hope it treats you well. They are bargain cars really, lots of metal for little money.

Looks like it has a detachable tow bar too, bonus!

Good luck with the C5.

I am taking more interest in C5s as time goes by, because like it or not, Xantias will not last for ever, and it's good to have an idea of what next.

For me, the big black marks against the C5 are the multi-plexing, and the dual mass flywheel

Will be interested to hear how you get on with it

Looks lovely, well done :D

I'm waiting for the facelift C5's to get a bit cheaper, then I might just be tempted to part with the Xantia.

I really want a 2.0Hdi 138 :D :D :D

Ah, but at least there is a remedy for the DMF, fit a solid flywheel.

There is one problem sorted, and apart from the comms2000 unit, which rarely goes, there are relatively few problems reported due to multiplexing.

C5s are the furute ...
