Re: Xantia power steering hydrulic pipe
I'm not altogether surprised. It is a fiddly old job at the best of times... Many mechanics not made of stern stuff will turn pale and rush off to do something easier, like brain surgery...k p brown wrote:got a dealer part but struggling to find a mechanic to fit it
Malcolm, you are clearly not of the latter type of mechanic
It is possible though with some judicious fiddling.
One point to watch. Depending on the age of your Xantia, and the model, it may have a Citroen-type union with a 6.35mm rubber seal at the pinion valve end. Others have a more conventional brake-type flare with no seal similar to the pump end flare.
The two are not compatible and if you find your old one has a Citroen-type flare and the new pipe has a brake-type flare then you need to swap the boss on the pinion valve as well. It simply unscrews but access is a little tight. A bi-hex socket will fit over it and with a few universal joints and extension bars it can be undone.

Ive changed one of these on an XUD Auto estate, and the AL4 box is bigger, and did it lieing down, without removing the box or anything.
Dont ALL xantia Pump to regulator feed pipes have a brake flare on them??
I know on a sinker the PAS pipe will have the long flare with seal on them...

As far as I know Paul, all pump flares are brake flares on the Xantia but it's the pinion valve end I'm saying can be of either type. I found this to be the case on a 1996 Activa. Original was Citroen-type but the new pipe was brake-type.citroenxm wrote: Dont ALL Xantia Pump to regulator feed pipes have a brake flare on them??
I successfully did this Activa using your method and removing nothing. Activas have the the ML5 gearbox and they must be close to the size of an AL4...

Doh! Of course, the other end!
Yes, Ive seen both too. I think again, sinkers have the Long Flare, and Anti sinkers 6+2 Pump cars have the Brake type...
Im not certain though.
