One for Malc? Dee head removal in-situ...

Unread post by addo »

Is it readily possible (thinking about my ID19)? Any special gotchas?

Also are the heads dowelled on like a Renault 20 etc?

Cheers, Adam.

Quite rightly so, far too messy.

Good point.

Potential snags from a quick scan, suggest there's little room to swing your breaker as on one side you have the firewall recess, and on t'other, spark plug tubes. Possibly one of those inline ratchets for a breaker bar, coupled with a short 6-point socket?

Yes

Best to remove the inlet rockers and rocker shaft assembly with the head and the head bolts undone, but still in.
This is because clearance to fully remove the head bolts on the inlet side at the back, is reduced by the bulkhead.
Also there are "O" rings around the head bolts under the inlet rocker shaft pedestals and when these have baked hard -as they will be- it can be very difficult to extract the head bolt through.
Also, the head bolts on the exhaust side can be quite corroded - where they pass through the cylinder head - in extreme cases this will hold the head bolt tight enough that the head bolt will break when you try and undo it.

There is at least one locating dowel to locate the head correctly on the block.

Hope that helps

Excellent information, thanks very much.

Would you know if this following gasket kit is the correct one (or a close match) for the early alloy headed ID engines?

http://www.ctaservice.nl/p-4268-gasket- ... lterid=107

Not necessarily my preferred vendor, just a good illustration/listing.

Cheers, Adam.

It's not for the early 1911cc ID
Its for the '66 onwards 1985cc engine.

This one is for the 1911cc engine.
Nobody is supplying gasket sets for those early 1911cc engines (but you could try Citroen Classics as Darrin will probably have the individual gaskets.)

So you are the other half of the Brownhills, then? I'd wondered.

CC already have a good rap from a mate in Tasmania. Also watching an older NOS gasket on the web currently - hopefully won't be gazumped by a lurker. Think I understand the differences now - early motors are the ones where there's appreciable separation and water passages between #2 and #3 bores.

I had a brief exchange with a fellow on Frogbay selling a "joint" set less the headgasket - it's for 78mm bore H/HY but he wasn't sure if it also fitted ID19s.

Cheers, Adam.

That's my lurking cover blown then.
If you email Darrin, he'll be able to help you more with which HY bits are compatible.

Snagged a head gasket for 18 EUR plus postage - happy about that.

Below is the other gasket set I'm watching:

Perhaps this picture from the seller is enough for DB to say yes or no?

Cheers, Adam.

p.s. If you can beat Stephane Djokovic on the complete front blinker prices, please tell me and I'll buy a pair without faffing around.

HY head gaskets have different holes for coolant due to having the water pump at the opposite end to a D. The other gaskets, such as the set you're watching will be OK though.

I may well be able to better his price, I'll have to check when I get back in the office tomorrow and report then. Send me an email to the business email address and I'll reply as soon as I get in.
Cheers,
Darrin
