Xantia TD clutch trouble

Post by JamesQB »

Hi

Xantia 1.9TD 1998

Is it exclusively a worn clutch when the clutch pedal is too high, and doesn't bite until it's almost at the very top of its travel?

Slipping when revved fairly hard, too.

Just wondered in case it could be adjustment problem, etc., or if definitely needs new clutch.

Thanks

Unless there is unusal noise, juddering or strange pedal feel it is 9/10 a worn out or failed clutch.

Look under the airbox for the end of the clutch cable, if it's threaded then you may be able to slacken the nuts down nearer the end.

How long ago was the clutch changed?

There's nothing unusual other than juddering when engaging the clutch to move from a standstill, and it doesn't engage at all until just before the pedal reaches the end of its travel.

I don't know when it was last changed - or if it ever has been. My parents bought the car 2nd hand last year, but although work was done at a dealership prior to the sale, there was no mention of the clutch. Car has done 170,000 km. Don't know what that is in miles, but it's plenty!

If it comes to a new clutch, what's the normal going rate?

About half a days labour + parts. I would strongly advise AGAINST using a clutch repair centre doing the work though, most of them are butchers.

Yeah agree, don't take any notice of anyone who says things like 'it's an engine out job' or it's a citroen it'll be a nightmare. Although it's not as easy as doing a saxo or a fiesta it's not the worst job in the world, about 4 hours work. (half day as already suggested)

Car's in Spain. It's where I am too, having a reprieve from the snow and cold!

Going to have to call a few local garages and get some prices for the job. It's pretty bad at the moment, slipping a lot unless you take it really easy on the revs.

In the Alicante region, near Denia. Doesn't look like any quotes will be got. Citroen dealership have offered a few quid for the car against a brand new Picasso which my parents have wanted for a while. I reckon best all round, too many car troubles lately. Hopefully a new one will put paid to that!
