Buying a 206 2.0l HDI 2001 reg - what to look for?

Hi All,

I've seen an ad for one of these and I'm going to look at it. I've never owned a Peugeot before (mainly Citroen's). What sort of things should I specifically look for on this model? The guy I spoke to said it's had a new bottom pulley. It's done 79K miles. 9 month MOT, no tax. It's apparently "a clean car" - but I'll be the judge of that when I see it! Any indication of what you'd expect to pay also would be greatly appreciated.

I would always want to see how it is on its first start-up on a freezing morning........always a good indicator of engine condition.

I used to own a 53reg 206 2.0HDi, it was a great car.

There isnt many things to look for on a 206, clonks from the rear suspension can be a problem, so listen for noises from the back.

The pulley its had replaced is also a common problem, i assume the belt was changed at the same time too.

Space in the engine bay is quite tight, my arms would be cut to ribbons after doing an oil and filter change!

Check its running well, it shouldn't hesitate to start, some HDis are a bit rattly, though it shouldn't be overly so.

Im not sure if the 2001 car your viewing will be multiplexed, as it came in around that time. If it is multiplexed, check everything works, check all of the controls and functions on the wiper and light stalks. Make sure the indicators dont wont the headlights etc! When i bought my current C5 it was doing that, I had turned the sidelights on during the testdrive, so it was working fine, but driving with the lights in the off position the indicators worked the headlights. A new comms at £180 fixed it.

Check its been serviced every 12500 miles, cambelts are 100K or 10 years.

Check for rust, its rare but i have seen some rusty 206s now.

Interior trim can be a bit brittle, so check its all in tact and working. I remember letting someone in the back of my 3 door 206, the handle for the seat flew off down the road!

On the whole though they are good cars, economical, reliable and cheap to keep. They are good fun to drive as their handling is quite good. Mine was on the quite wide 5 spoke 15" 206 wheels and it really did corner well, certainly thought me about lift off oversteer - it was excellent! I do miss it a bit actually.
