Heated Rear Window goes bang!

A week or so ago I noticed that the HRW on my Xantia Estate wasn't working. Closer inspection revealed one of the connectors was not connected to the glass. I dug about and found reference to Wire Glue and managed to stick the offending connector back in place.

All seemed well until I turned it on. The window cleared so I turned it off and then heard this almighty BANG!

The window shattered - luckily it didn't fall in and remained intact.

I am now waiting for Autglass to turn up with replacement. Not sure if I have a question - more of letting others know and asking if others have had similar bad experience. I don't know for sure if Wire Glue was to blame or if a stone flipped up but it certainly made a bang.

Hopefully normal service will be resumed shortly.

Gosh

All I can think is that the wire glue caused a localised hotspot that caused the glass to shatter.

One to be aware of, that's for sure.

Can you tell if the shattering originated from the point where you glued it?

I've seen one rear window (not in a Citroen) shatter in very hot weather (summer of '76 in fact) and most likely for the same reason. Sun shining on an imperfection causing a hotspot.

Yes I think it originated where the glued part was located as there is a small hole.

quick check the glue tube for a disclaimer if it hasnt got one timefor a stern letter to the manufacturer, you might get lucky you might not.

Autoglass came and went - for some reason they brought the wrong piece of glass (thought my estate was a hatch back).

Apparantly Xantia Estate rear windows are not a stock item (can you believe it!) so they have to order from Citroen.

I just hope the window holds and Citroen don't close for Xmas - I sense a very cold few days.

I'll check on the glue tube - thanks for the tip.

Yes, it was a cause of the loose wire!

I had this on my 309 about ten years ago.. I had a loose wire on one side - and I distinctly remember fiddleing with it... then 5 mins later BANG! It blew in, as the 309 rear screen was at an angle it fell into the car!

Used one of the conductive pens before to draw a trace across the wires where they were broken on the heated rear window on a xantia - worked fine and still does.
