Citroen C4 - Depollution System Faulty.

Unread post by R9UKE »

Hi Guys,

Not like me to be posting in the Citroen section - haven't done so since I had the C5 :(

Anyway, my grandmother just called me asking my advice.
She just arrived home from Donegal (a 120 mile journey she does once a month to see her mother) and said that towards the end of her journey the car warned that the Depollution System is faulty.

The car is a 2005 Citroen C4 Coupé 1.6 HDi VTR+ with 50,000 miles.

From my limited knowledge I know that this is a fairly common message for HDi drivers to get, and relatively simple to put right?

Will it require urgent attention, or can it wait until after the festive period?

Thanks!

Hi R9UKE,

Having had this warning several times over on a 2005 2.0HDI C4 my advice would be don't rush off to the dealer but wait and see. Chances are the message will disappear of its own accord, sometimes after a fill up of diesel.
There is a proximity switch located near the fuel filler neck (and operated by magnets in the cap) which allows an ECU to detect when the filler cap has been removed and replaced. This switch is known to fail. So far, as I said above, I have escaped the dealers expensive clutches and the fault messages have gone away of their own accord within a few days driving.

Sorry to dig up and old thread here, but better than creating a new one!

As you can guess, the warning has now become pretty much a common fixture over the past few weeks. And it's still there after 250+ miles of motorway driving over the past four days. Any ideas as to what more can be done? Other than standing back and smugly grinning as I glance over at my own cars which run on the correct fuel 8-)

The car is always serviced annually, and had it's last one about 3 months ago. Bloody diesels....

Is that the exact message it gives? "system fauly"?

Best to get it on a Lexia and get a more detailed code of what is up with it.

"Anti - pollution system faulty". Yep, no engine management light though! Will do - will get onto someone in NI about a Lexia on this side of the water. Thanks Chris.

That is effectively the engine management light - it could mean anything. Lexia required. If it's a 90 BHP model then it won't have a DPF so that could be ruled out....
