Fan keeps on coming on Xantia 1.9td

Unread post by civvie »

Last night I had the stop sign light up and the little orange light by the temp gauge come on.
The temp gauge showed normal IE 80 degrees, the header tank was full but the top hose didn't feel very hot. Got it home and today I took out the thermostat and have been running around with it out today. The temp gauge shows 60 degrees but the rad fan keeps on cutting in. Am I being neurotic with the fan keeping on cutting in? I would have thought that the engine would have to get at least up to and maybe over the normal tempature before the fan kicks in. I don't recollect it doing this before. Felt the radiator this evening and there are no cold spots.
Any ideas.
Thanks, Steve

You can't run a car with a bypass type thermostat without the thermostat in. It serves a dual purpose of directing the flow around the radiator while cutting off the recycled flow through the head. You are sending the water in all sorts of wrong directions, and are liable to do permanent damage to your engine.

Try cleaning the contacts on the two temp sensors screwed into the thermostat housing. This is the usual cause of the temperature warning light and fans coming on for no reason on a Xantia.
Its a failsafe system, if there's a dodgy connection the fans are designed to come on more than normal, rather than not at all.

Thanks for that Nick, nice to know that just occasionally Citroen don't transfer design faults from one car to another, I wonder how many BX cylinder heads/gaskets have been destroyed by the fans failing in the off position?
