1993 ZX Volcane TD fan blower motor

Unread post by charlow »

Please can anyone tell me if the motor has replaceable brushes.
My fan has been playing up more and more lately and only just works on maximum speed setting, albeit very slowly!
It make a clicking noise which sounds to me that the motor brushes are worn dow to the springs, which are rubbing on the commutator.
If this is correct, how do I get to the brushes, is it easy? and where can I buy some new brushes?

If its the same as the Xantia/XM fan the motor is quite easy to remove, take off the passenger side under dash panel, the motor is held in with three screws, one or two plugs to disconnect. You will then have to remove the motor from its housing by compressing the three rubber blocks.

Never had one with worn out brushes but its a possibility. Could be a fault with the speed control system.

Like Peter I must also start by saying " if it's the same as the Xantia" and while endorsing what Peter says. might I add that it might be the Transistors in the Blower, which are easily replaced & cost very little to purchase. There was a lot of advice given here on this problem at the end of Oct/early November on transistor replacement. ( I wrote in here having the same problem as you) If you do need brushes cheaper to go to a good hardware shop & look at brushes for various makes of power tools, where you should find suitable brushes, rather than paying huge money purchasing them from a Dealer.

the resistor pack could well be the coild wire type contained in a matal cadge,

if it is this type you remove the scuttle between the screen and bonnet, reach into the scuttle openning at the N/S pull the fan intake grill off, now reach down into the air intake ductt grab the resistor pack turn about a quarter of a turn, pull it out then unplug its plug,

fitting a new one is a reverse,

Many thanks guys,
The car is in the garage for it's annual mot, but I'll look when I get it back.
I was hoping that a ZX owner could confirm what you've said.
