oil leak on inlet manifold on 306 hdi

Post by scfc_151 »

I have a small leak seaping out on the inlet manifold on my 306 hdi (towards the right of the manifold)

I just wondered if there was a gasket that could be replaced?

Also what could cause the oil to seap out of there?

Two issues.............Issue one, is that the turbo oil seals are probably worn and allowing a seapage of oil into the air intake system (which is pressurised by the turbo), and issue two is that the inlet manifold gasket is 'blown' and needs replacing..... the seapage of oil from the leaky turbo seal is highlighting the inlet manifold gasket failure at the point you see the oil escaping from.

A small amount of oil passing the turbo seals is allowable, and as long as engine oil consumption is within limits i wouldnt worry about it, i would only replace the inlet manifold gasket asap as you will be down on turbo pressure while it is leaking..

thanks for the reply

Is the inlet manifold gasket an easy job for a diy mechanic?

It looks straight forward enough but any tips?

Yes, straightforward job, just make sure the surfaces are perfectly clean on re-assembly.......(mechanics tip......not a bad idea to have the engine 'warm' prior to doing the job during cold weather, kinder to the hands!)

Thats great thanks

Ive been looking for a picture on the net to make sure im looking at the correct joint.

Ive had a quick look again tonight and it looks like the seapage is creaping slightly futher.

ive noticed some noise which is difficult to put my finger on. It kind of sounds like someone runnning a finger around a crystal glass in the drivers seat but cant hear it when I open the bonnet

Would a leaking gasket cause any noise

You would possibly hear a 'whistle' or 'squealing' kind of noise while accelerating due to the turbo building up pressure that is escaping via the manifold gasket.

Whistling noise update

Post by scfc_151 »

I bobbed the car into my local french car specialist who look after my car.
These guys are quite helpful and had a listen for the noise.

The mechanic could also here it and with his stethoscope located it towards the drivers side near the bulkhead.

He disconnected the egr plug but it didnt go, he couldnt quite put his finger on it.

Any ideas?

I'm probably stating the obvious here but wouldnt it make sense to replace the manifold gasket first before any further investigations re the noise?

from the pic it looks more like the joint between the inlet manifold and the elbow rather than between the inlet manifold and cylinder head

which is good because that also looks a lot easier to change than having to take the inlet manifold off.

I'm not familiar with the 90bhp engine, is there a rubber section joining the turbo outlet to that elbow?

might be worth checking or changing that at the same time
