Peugeot 106 Quicksilver difference

Post by igor253 »

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a 106 Quicksilver. I need you guys to tell me the difference between a Quicksilver and a regular 106. Diffrenece in looks would be best. The reason is, I don't want to be tricked when asking for a Quicksilver and getting a regular 106 instead. Also, is there an easy and "quicksilver" :) way to check if the car has 16 valve or 8 valve engine?

Thanks guys! :D

There are several quicksilver editions from memory.

Later ones include passenger airbag (this may be a clue)

Obviously they are silver. They have the wheel arch spats (not sure if that's the correct term) similar to the GTi and usually the centreless GTi style wheels (possibly 14")

Instrument panel should include both tacho and fuel / temp gauges.

Engines are usually 8v 1.4 petrol. ABS optional, possibly standard on the last ones.

No UK spec models had A/C

Disclaimer: I'm working from memory and its been about 5 years.

EDIT... Later ones have a QuickSilver badge on the passenger side of the dash where the airbag is (well, next to it) just to the left of the middle of the dash (about 1" heigh and say 3" long)
Andy.

91 205D-Turbo, gone but still missed
02 106D, TUD5B, gone but not really missed apart from the MPG

Thanks for the reply Andy,

To be specific, I'm thinking of getting, say 2002 model 1.4, and is there a 1.4 version with a 16v engine? I know the wheels you are talking about, but about this badge, could you upload a pic for me if it's not to much trouble? :D

Thanks a lot!

A Qucksilver seems to be a base 106 with a 1.4 engine, the GTI style wheel arch mouldings and some standard kit, like electric windows etc. Some Quicksilvers even had steel wheels and trims from new, not alloys.

Its a similar thing that Citroen did with the Saxo Furio, looks a bit like a VTR, but with steel wheels and 1.4 engine. You could always go for one of those!

I think all are 1.4 8vs with 75bhp?

The easiest way to tell a Quicksilver is the quicksilver writing on the doors.

206 Quicksilvers are the same, 1.4 engine, body styling kit from the GTi and steel wheels. Though im sure these had air con. These had Quicksilver decals on the doors too.

A lot of 106 Quicksilvers look Chav-tastic now! Avoid those, you dont want a thrashed car.

It seems Quicksilvers go for a premium over normal 106s/206s.

Yes, 1.4 8v 75bhp. There isn't a 1.4 16v version. As said they're a bit of a chav magnet since it looks a bit like a GTI, but without the cost (or performance). Watch out for massive alloys, slammed suspension and big zorsts.

I knew someone who bought a chav'd Quicksilver 106, it very rarely worked and turned into a money pit. So you need to choose the best you can, and check for signs of body repairs too. As i bet a few have been the wrong side of a hedge at times.

a quicksilver is a 1.4 8v, with gti arches. later ones have alloys and a boot spoiler. Drums on the back and 75 bhp.

things to look out for:
Play in the rear beam.
knocking on the driveshafts on full lock.
rust in the rear inner arches and boot floor.
worn gear linkages.
