Xantia transformed !!!

Post by HDI »

My Xantia is presently being treated to a thorough going over, there is a long list of jobs I have neglected for too long !

Today I replaced all four corner spheres and the accumulator and to say the car is transformed is an understatement of some magnitude !

I had forgotten just how good the ride on a Xantia should be, this is just so plush !
It had been suffering with an intermittently hard ride, with the rear sometimes being almost solid, replacing the spheres has shown me just how bad they were, I feel so guilty for leaving it this long.
The sport switch now works properly, and the automatic hydractive system also functions as it should.
Even in the workshop it was apparent how much better it was, pushing the front or back down was so easy, before it was near rigid !
Maybe now it will stop blowing the main pressure feed pipe from the pump !

Also did the front brake pads, which it gets through quite quickly.
I replaced the crank pulley last week, the front drop links are being done tomorrow.
Next will be the cam belt and pulleys, water pump, get the aircon working and fix the cold weather boost heater.
Good thing I don't have to pay a garage to do all this !
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

Excellent :D

It's amazing how knackered spheres creeps up on you and you don't notice the slow deterioration until your eyeballs start to rattle one day...

Luckily, having three of them, if one is deteriorating, a drive in one of the others soon shows it up...

Thing is, my eyeballs have been rattling for 2 years !! Well, not quite rattling but disturbed !

BTW, the spheres were from Pleiades.

Nothing rides like a good Citroen :)

Citroen should have engineered some kind of sphere pressure warning system, so you know when they are in need of looking at. So many Xantias i see (gettig less and less) are bouncing around on their tyres alone. Ive been in Xantias with flat spheres, its not fun!

I fear that some of these are potentially rescue-able Xantias that have been sold cheaply by owners who have been quoted ridiculous money for a sphere change. The new owner has bought it as a 'disposable' car oblivious to the fact that the 'broken springs' may kill the occupants and/or some innocent third party. I've recently seen a Xantia being driven around on Intermediate! Obviously the driver hadn't a clue what the control lever is for (or has been misinformed).

Either that or its stuck in high, most Xantias go to high, or very near high, in intermediate dont they. Unless they are told to do different

I can imagine its spheres which write off a lot of Xantias, as they should not pass MOTs with no suspension movement.

Indeed very dangerous/

Paul,

Take a look under the N/S/F bumper corner in front of the wheel where you should be able to see (or even feel if you reach down) the exhaust pipe hanging down, my V reg 99 as well as the W and X reg 2000 models I recently looked at buying had them. However I imagine that most of them now no longer work, if it turns out yours does have one give me a shout and I'll give you the info on getting it going again.

Especially true of Citroens !!

I hate when people play the card that Citroens are nothing but trouble
What do people expect when spheres and such things need to be renewed

Good to here you have re-discovered the comfort of your Xantia,it surprises me too how well the old girl will still move..

It's worth remembering that as well as being uncomfortable knackered front spheres give the strut tops a hard time. This sticks with me given the price of XM tops.

Steve.
