Jamming starter on BX diesel
I have a friend with a BX diesel (non-turbo). The starter has jammed twice over a period of a couple of months - freed by rocking the car in gear. Is this something that she can live with for a while or is it liable to cause major problems if left untreated. I would hate to give her the wrong advice......

A typical starter motor wear symptom.
The starter motor should be overhauled or replaced.
The problem is prone to lock the motor to the ringgear to such extent - that only remedy is removing the starter motor - the engine itself is locked - and the car can then not be push-started.
Replacing the starter motor is a simple job. Typical DIY entry level job. Should readily be done within 0.5hrs at any garage.
The diesel starter motor is a bit special with reduction gear for higher cranking torque - therefore a new unit is pricy - expect something in the £150 range.
My advice is repair ASAP.

just done mine on a turbo, took it to my local Bosch centre he said he could recon it for ?70, when I went back for it at the end of the day, there was a recon motor but not mine, now it had worked perfectly right up to the moment when it wouldn't start the car, no slow cranking, no jamming, but he showed me the remains of my old motor (Which cynic that i am I had marked before I took it in) it was completely shot, cummutator indented about 4 or 5mm bearings on the verge of collapse etc, the guy could scarcely believe that it was working the day before! The bill? still ?70, what a real good place, new motor is great so for any of you guys needing stuf doing in N yorks e-mail me and send you their address. Sometime ago they did my Alternator for my CX GTI Turbo,I had had at least one new one before, when I picked it up he had converted it to an external regulator, he said they were always having trouble with the big output alternators and had found that having an external regulator awy from the heat and vibration gave more reliable results. It did I did another 60K in that one without a moments trouble

You've given him a good enough reference to make him a valuable asset to anyone in that area.
What's his contact details? Bit far for me to travel but no doubt there's plenty close enough who are curious and could use him. [8D]
We have enough problems with dodgy tradespeople so a plug for a good'un doesn't go astray.

I do my own so no worries there; I doubt Bransden could even make a trip there to get the starter fixed viable though [:D]
Post it on the board mate; no problems.
We do get some at times who can cause a bit of concern & I can appreciate the thoughts in not doing blatant ads for Andys opposition but auto sparkys are a bit of a rare breed and one doing a good job at a reasonable price would be in everyones interests.

I'd talk to them first. I have been impressed with their service over the years and they have certainly worked OK for me
