1.9TD running temp

Unread post by Xaccers »

Just wondering how your Xantias are running now the temperature has dropped?
Cassy normally runs at 80-90C but with the colder weather she's been sitting at 60C quite often.
Could it be the thermostat sticking open?

In general an XUD will run around 80c regardless of the weather, possibly slightly less this time of the year (75 say)

Lower than 70 indicates gauge / sender issue (unlikely as they tend no to fail 'low' on these) or thermostat is slightly stuck open.

Just in my experience generally though this is. :)

Xac mine suggests 85-90 in summer, often climbing 90 to a scary 98 until fans kick in.. I think now it's suggesting 75-80 more of the time..
I have little faith in the readings as such...

the coupe shows 70-80 in summer and less at this time of year.. although I have little faith in those numbers also. would be nice to know for sure
..I brought a digital temp gauge on ebay for my chevy, with a probe inserted into the pipework, cost me about £10 I think..

Once the green estate has warmed up, she runs with the needle rock-steady at 80ºC only climbing to about 85ºC (where the fans kick-in) if maneouvring or left idling.

At the risk of stating the obvious, a thermostat sticking open means longer warm-up times and when you use the heater, the engine temp will drop even further.

Changing the thermostat is very easy - you'll lose some coolant, so maybe time to change it?

My running temperature has drop around 5 degrees from 90 to 85., but prior to changing the stat earlier this year it was 60 degrees.

My 1.9 td runs bang on 80, it only takes 1.5 miles to get to full running temp too :)

Normally petrol Xantia (talking about mine) runs at 75-80 °C. During cold temperatures front grill cover would help.
Mostly diesel models are using grill covers during the cold period.

You can also make your own from a black polycarbonate sheet material and still keep your Xantia's street cred 8-)
Factory grille covers are clip-in designs but you can tie your DIY cover with suitable cable tiers.
Engine under trays are also good to use during winter season. Of course they are more expensive to buy
and more difficult to make on your own :(

Dave are you OK? I thought 37° was normal, or has your car learned how to type?

Are there any things I need to be wary of when changing the stat or is it a straight forward job?

It's straightforward.

Depending on the type of thermostat housing it will either have a circlip holding it in, or just have a plastic housing bolted to 'hold' it in place.

I think the circlip ones were discontinued around 93 / 94 though, but having not seen one for about 5 years  , my memory is failing.

Ensure you have a new seal if appropriate.

You can (if you wish) place a bowl or something under the engine (protect gearbox / wiring with a cardboard sheet) and only partially drain the cooling system (having take spillage precautions, just remove the top hose!) , it will need to be bled after anyway.

Then you will only want one or two litres of antifreeze, although if its due a change now is a sensible time.

Usual precautions obviously (don't want to tell you how to suck eggs) cold engine ;)

Cassy's thermostat is almost certainly located under the fuel filter housing. The top hose fits over an adaptor that's secured to the front of the thermostat housing by two bolts (10mm hex head IIRC). Can't remember if there's a gasket or a rubber ring.

Cassy's radiator should have a drain tap- bottom O/S. Makes draining off enough coolant fairly easy but you need something like a large washing-up bowl.

The time-consuming part is bleeding all the air out of the cooling system.

Living in a hard-water area, to mix up coolant I've always used rain water - plenty around this week!
