C5 Exclusive Auto .Expected MPG

Post by Model Flyer »

Hello I'm new to forum and to the newer citroens. Does any one have an idea what MPG to expect from a 04/5 2.2hdi auto C5 Exclusive ? My son has just bought one and while the car seem to be brilliant, the MPG 29/30 on a reasonble run seems a bit on the low side. Car has done 70,000 miles (verified) and has been serviced by a local Citroen main dealer. The engine sounds perfect but as I say seems a bit thirsty. I'm comparing it to my volvon D5 that does 37/40 mpg on a run . Any suggetions would be of help.
Thanks

Unfortunally, the 2.2 16v c5 is NOT a very economical engine in the first place, even with 2.2 manuals struggleing 40mpg... due to FAP's etc etc..

So, I would not expect much more from an auto at all..

I would expect prehaps 35 to try and be fair... and that on a run..

I personally, though, have not owned a 2.2, I know a couple ofpeople who have had them, and the owner with the 2.2 manual, struggled more then 40 on regular long runs..

42 mpg on long M/Way runs

27 /31 Mixed X country urban.

26-27 Urban / shopping.

Starting from cold really sucks fuel....!!! the ECU objective is to get temperature up as quickly as possible at the expense of economy

Problems to look for:-

Inoperative swirl- valves, partially choked FAP,
Gearbox hanging on to second longer than it should.

Generally my assessment is that the engine is not well sorted, the gearbox software is not well sorted and the combination is nowhere near well sorted

Hi Model Flyer, I also have a 2.2 HDI Auto and what a beutiful car it is to drive but the fuel consumption is similar to yours, around town I get around 24mpg, the auto box around town very seldom gets out of 2nd gear but on a run of course it is in top with the TC locked so I would have thought the consumption would be similar to a manual but it is not.
By the way I used to be a "Model Flyer" too old I am afraid now.

From past experience I'd agree as well, seems to be about the norm, consumptionwise.

Its a damm shame really...

It is a damm useless thirsty engine, for a modern lump.. which too many C5's got... I love the 2.2 spec, with standard Sat nav and colour centre screen, if the 2.o Hdi 8v got that, then Id be happy... I think Ive only seen one 2.oi 8v hdi with colour centre screen...

Well... in all honesty the Sat nav is even more useless than the engine although the screen is nice.

I wouldn't say that the engine was Damn useless, just not fully developed at introduction witness the later version which puts out a 173 BHP and with (by all acounts) considerably better economy.
Put into perspective it's no worse than the 2.5 fitted to the XM, may actually be better in terms of performance and the 2.5 was always highly rated by XMers.
The FAP is widely and probably correctly blamed for much of the relatively poor performance, this was the first implementation of such a system as far as I know and as a prototype system not adequately tested / tuned before implementation. Consumption improvements of 4-6 mpg have been reported by those that have dispensed with them which would take the consumption figures on an auto-box at least far closer to the 2.0.
Equally my experience of the Auto Box is that the auto-adaption regime for a large part of the time keeps the box in less than optimal low gears this also does nothing for consumption.

I think a lot of the problem is actually the gearbox, for a start it's only a 4 speed, or at least it was on my 2.2 Exclusive. This my personal opinion. I actually get better consumption from the C6.

Mmmm ok, useless is a bit harsh, but then theres the Injector problem when they go tits up.. but thats not the debaite, or even the "Agreement" here.. so far we have ALL agreed they are not good at all on fuel..

Im not a 2.5 XM 12v unit fan either... im a big fan of the 2.1 12v in stead, which in early guise sees out 45mpg easy!!

I agree with Paul.

I stayed away from the 2.2 HDi, I wasn't 'sure' about the FAP, the 16V head issues and the fact that 2.2s cost more to TAX. I would have like the H3+ and colour screen though. In the end I went with a 2.0 8v 110 with a remap. It still wasn't brilliant MPG wise for the short journey to work every day - generally 32mpg.

Having owned the 2.5 XM I'm not a fan of that engine either, a complete pig to work on, parts are rare or expensive or both. But for the simple technology it uses it's smooth and torquey. In the XM estate doing the same journeys I could get 31-33mpg but could run it on veg oil/diesel with not trouble.

The first 2.1 XM I owned with the Lucas pump gave around 40mpg. Nice engine, loads of parts and reasonably straight forward.

By contrast the little A Class feels more powerful and returns around 50mpg in the same conditions. However god help me if it goes wrong. Oh and the ride is awful.

Steve.

All the cars are manual.

Thanks for all the info . I did forget to mention that the gearbox is a tiptronic and even using it as a manumatic (if that make sense ) and changing up early it still doesn't return good MPG. We have found that although it being serviced by a Citroen main dealer the servicing has IMO been poor. ie. The box states air filter replacement every 40,000 .Thats fair enough but surely it should be removed ,inspected and dusted at interim servicing? No such luck the air box was full of leaves etc and the air filter was solid having covered 30,000 since being installed. It certainly make you wonder about maindealers in general and the premium usually put on the asking price that goes with it . Its now been given a service of known quality (done it our selves!) so will see what happens to mileage.

I'm surprised too (and I'm new too).

My first car was my father's old Volvo 221 (121 estate), which did 29 mpg most of the time, 36 mpg on a couple of longer runs

40 years of progress sometimes don't seem to have had as much effect as you'd think.

Thats my point about the XM 2.1 TD!!! My 1991 H plate one can do 45mpg!!

Completely mechanical!! No electronics!

I ALSO find it amazing how many people think that because its gone to a main dealer for service its gaurenteed to be done... ITS NOT!

My sister recently bought a C4 1.6 HDi.. Quote ".... oooo we'll give it a service and once over...." I checked the oil when we went to look over it, it was well over due... result when she got the car... Still not changed..

We'll do it ourselfs! We know its done then!

Best policy!
The times I've seen 'recently serviced' cars that haven't been touched in years. Daughter's SAAB being a case in point.
At the very least let someone you can trust do it.
