Xantia ABS rings
Anyone any experience with replacement ABS rings for Xantias - recommendations for suppliers? The split in one of mine is causing the ABS to play up again, and I am convinced I am going to shunt it at a junction when it decides not to stop - so think I had better do something about it! Someone on another list glued the ring with araldite, but mine looked to have a pretty big (gunky) gap in it, so I think replacement will be the way to go.

This seems to be a Series 2 problem... only.. Not seen it on a S1 Xantia..
I had this, but managed to recover the rings, I removed them off, cleaned the rust off the CV and inside the ABS Ring... put the ring back on, and then spot welded it in place with my Mig welder.. Worked perfectly!

Re: Xantia ABS rings
Hi Richard.. same problem with mine at the moment, as a temporary measure I recommend removing the 'ABS fuse' to disable the ABS because as no doubt you are aware you enter a 'no brakes' situation when the ABS detects a fault. Better no ABS than no brakes!RichardW wrote:Anyone any experience with replacement ABS rings for Xantias - recommendations for suppliers? I'm not so sure that approach is the best.
Unless anyone can say they've demonstrated it for themselves on the Teves ABS:
Flashing of the dash indicator simply indicates an irregular condition. It does not mean the system fails to work altogether.
By comparison, removing the fuse means it fails to work altogether. I'll take a ripped parachute over no parachute, every time.

FWIW - I had a flicker on the ABS light on my Hdi (turned out to be chaffed wires on front n/s) and the ABS decided, due to internittent signals from that rotor, to release my brakes and nearly put me and family into back of the car in front. When it did again a couple of times, I fulled the fuse and drove it like the many non-ABS cars I've had without a problem, until I got the replacement.
So, IMHO, I'd not use the system if it's got an intermittent fault.
I think that ABS rings can be quite tricky - I think there is freezing of parts involved to contract them. At the time it was a lot less bother to a second hand half shaft .

Isn't it a MOT failure?jgra1 wrote:on my 99 TD xant, I have had two faulty sensors for 2 years, ...
I have read about similar cases, as citroenxm told where only the ABS ring is removed (heat/cold).
In another case the story was about the ring which became loose on its own
I'm lucky that so far I had to change in mine, only one of the rear sensors

yes VV.. but the way the previous owner seemed to get around the problem had me baffled for some time.. something about the ABS light and how it was wired.. annoyed the hell out of me, but at last it's all ok now for a few hours work and £45...
I wanted to fix the system for ages, but not having a light to tell me if I had fixed it was annoying..

I can only speak from personal experience (I believe there have been previous posts and an ongoing court case in Germany I think) The ABS light extinguishes as normal on start up, first application (even gentle) of the brakes causes ABS to 'cut in' as your Xantia continues down the road whilst you go into panic mode and search for the handbrake hidden under the armrest!!!! And then the ABS light illuminates.. Great!addo wrote:I'm not so sure that approach is the best.

No ABS light, just a kick back from the pedal sometimes as the speed nears zero. Might try the welding approach - not got much to lose!
As an aside Xantias are probably OK with non-functioning ABS due to the load sensitive rear brakes - however, many modern cars rely on the ABS to prevent the rear locking up and do away with the load sense valve (our Picasso doesn't have one for instance) and these are pretty dangerous to drive with non-functioning ABS - unless you like the back coming round to meet you!

I welded the ABS rings back onto the drive shafts on my girl friends HDi Exclusive.
I thought it had done the trick until when I had the dials out I realised the previous owner had joined the ABS light to the Oil Pressure light so that it came on at start up and went off.
I've not looked into it further yet as I've not had time but it's something I must get round to at some point.
David.

Things took a turn for the 'interesting' this morning! Been no trouble at all recently, but this morning, frantic ABS every time I went near the pedal - I had to stop and remove the fuse in the end to prevent a rear end shunt occuring
Car has been stood nearly 3 weeks due to broken exhaust / holidays, and the brakes were well rusty yesterday - oddly no ABS problems yesterday, but it was mayhem this morning right from the off. Oddly, no ABS light (till I pulled the fuse that is
).
Looks like I will be breaking out the spanners at the weekend if the weather is OK. After I have replaced the video cable on the laptop

Check the air gap between the sensor and the ring, if its too wide it causes such symptoms. Ideally connect it up to diagnostic equipment and observe the sensors performing live to know which one is causing the problem.

The rings split and so spin on the shaft, as I said in a previous post on the subject if you need to leave it for a while a temp fix is to clean all the crud from where the ring sits, pour loctite around it and push the ring back into place, let the loctite set and you'll be ok for some time.
I did mine like that in late October and it worked fine until I had time to do a proper fix in the springtime.
