144k Service

Post by MTND »

Hi All

After ten years of ownership I'm beginning to go over to an oil change and filter every 3k miles but as I'm due a normal 6k mile service I'm wondering if anyone can suggest any extra things it would be worth getting checked over to make sure I keep on top of things?
My car is a N Xantia 1.9td SX manufactured on the 3rd May 1995 and has done 144k miles. I always try and get anything done when it needs doing and want to keep the car in as good a condition as posible so any ideas would be welcome :)

Cheers

Mark

Rear callipers!!!

Check them, make sure the Alloy corrosion has not set in between the caliper and arm... this push's the caliper out at an angle and wears the pads at an angle, and so on... If it gets severe enough, the caliper bolt can snap off....

As for the engine, short of oil and fuel and air filter changes, you have that in hand...

Have you had the Cam belt changed?? Ay 144k Id guess you have at around 85k?

Coolant change once a year and mixed 50:50.

The secret for a long and happy TD life is a tip-top cooling system and regular coolant changes...

Normal cambelt interval is 72k, so if it's not been done then it's bang on due at 144k - probably needs a change of tensioner too at this mileage if it's a keeper.

Addition to all good tips given above I would say that transmission oil change also extends the life of your car.
The oil in the gearbox is not forever. If you have manual and BE3 then 1.8 l of Total 75W80 will be best.
I change at every max 70-80k miles. I have already done it a couple of times :) My Xantia's clock would show
over 200k miles if it was an UK car 8-) (factory assembled same engine and gearbox).

If you take care of your car then it will take care of you ... :D

The 144k service on that year is everything (as its the second 72k) , coolant / cambelt etc etc

I would agree also to change the gearbox oil, unless you know it was done previously, although not a service item as above its not 'for life' really.

Thanks for all the advice its much appreciated. I bought the car when it was five years old with 29k on the clock so my first cam belt change was done at 7 years rather than the mileage the second was at 14 years so should be ok for a few more yet although I'm aware it could be useful to change more often as the car gets older.
The coolant was done at the last service so that should be ok.

I've had a new clutch so my question is, would the gearbox oil have had to be drained and changed then? I'll get them to check the calipers as well.
Any more ideas?

Thanks

Mark :)

You would lose the gearbox oil during a clutch change yes.

Only a very bad place would put it back in.

The driveshaft seals should ideally be changed at this time (as they do not tend to like being re-used) , I always changed them as they were cheap anyway as it was annoying if it did leak afterwards. New seals = no leak.
