Bouncing xantia

Post by Jaspwieser »

Just collected the car from it's former owner, it's my first Citroën and I'm just wondering why every now and then the front suspension just keeps on bouncing up and down like a kangaroo. It did it twice in a 12 mile trip.

I assume this is not normal
Any ideas

Hi,

Tell us as exactly as you can which model of Xantia it is.

How rapidly did it bounce?

I presume the car was moving at the time?

No need to tell us model etc etc - NO Xantia should bounce like a Kangaroo! They should glide beautifully!!!

Sounds like two front Suspension spheres are URGENTLY needed... but your car Spec and engine will be needed for that.. IE: Base, LX, SX, VSX, Exclusive... Petrol, Turbo D, HDi...

Hi, it's a 2001 2.0 hdi lx estate.
The ride was like going over high speed bumps very close together, seemed to last for about 15 seconds each time.
Each time it happened I had been accelerating after being stationary. Probably doing no more than 20-30 mph

If new spheres are needed would a good place to get them sorted be western spheres.
I'm no mechanic, however I just got the Haynes manual, can foresee my hands getting dirty sometime very soon

LX is the answer

It has Ordinary Suspension then... with 6 spheres...

Sounds like firstly you need two front units... On a late HDi the job it quite easy as the pressure regulator is easy to get at then later cars, as its higher up the gearbox..

Goto AEP, or CitroenServices, their spheres are VERY VERY good and keenly priced, about 55 quid a pair Delivered!

They are also called Citroenservices on ebay, which is how I buy mine..

You be able to do them yourself, or should able too, do you mean Westron Service?? You could with this fourm do it yourself - but you need a reasonably good sphere removal tool.

The procedure, covered many times is quite easy...

Have the engine running, then with the lever in the car, lower the car to the lowest setting!! Leave it running for a min or two....

Locate the Regulator unit on the front of the engine, Its got a green sphere attached to it, on the front of the gearbox...

Now on the front of the unit facing the radiator, theres a 12mm NUT, its the ONLY 12mm nut on the regulator, with the engine running open the NUT about 1 TURN ONLY! DO NOT remove it!!

Now, stop the engine... IF you are lucky, you may be able to undo the front spheres at each side by hand.... If not, this is when you need the Sphere tool.... change the two spheres, you will loose an egg cup full of fluid... NOTE the colour of the fluid, it should be a nice Green colour. If it looks brown then the system is due a flush and new fluid putting in..

IF you find the spheres are still tight to tuen after half a turn or so, then theres still pressure behind them.... This is why the engine should be left to run for a min or two when first lowered to make sure the suspension goes right down....

Fit your new spheres, hand tighten them up, then start the engine.. it will self bleed, then tighten the 12mm regulator screw... and put your height lever back in the Ride Normal position in the car...

And enjoy.
