C5 Rear Calipers and Disks CHECK YOURS!!!!
Hi all...
Just a information point here rather then help wanted...
Called to rear Pad worn out on a C5, 2002 model HDi.. Ok no problem.. got the pads.. all set.
Rear wheel off on Nearside, and to my horror, it was extreamilly noticable the calliper was at a 15 deg angle to the disk!!! I thought this would have only been a Xantia problem, but appears worse on the C5... not only that, it was that bad it had dug in and worn the disk on the inner side, so not viewable through the alloy!
I ONLY JUST managed to remove the bolts without breaking them, cleaned the face up, but had to reit one old pad on the inner side and a new pad on the outer, while I ordered disks...
Thats the next shock... bigger disk, bigger price! I was looking at around £70 for a PAIR
Up shot, hopefully get them fitted for customer this weekend, and damm hope the drivers (O/S) side caliper is not as bad as the passenger (N/S) side.
So, C5 owners, it appears they suffer just as badly!! Ive not seen a Xantia caliper wear a disk, so CHECK YOURS on the inside and outside, NOT just by looking through the disk.

i had extream problems on a C5 which i had in to fit rear arm bearing on both sides,
the N/S bolts were so stuck in the calliper even after they had finnaly unscrewd from the arm, i ended up buying new bolts and drifting the old ones out of the calliper very tight all the way out), i have heard it said they are lock tighted down there shancks through the calliper body,
on unscrewing them the moved an 1/8th of a turn at a time with loud creaking all the way out of there threads in the arm,
the arm bearings were very easy,
my local dealers parts manager told me there fitters dont bother trying, they just lop off the old calliper's and bolts and fit everything new, as at there hourly rate it works out cheaper
regards malcolm

Xantia Rear Disks are JUST disks too!
Its the rear hub which is bearing enclosed too...
The rear C5 disks are about the size of Xantia TD Front disks!!!!
Malcolm, I DID have trouble with the bolts sticking in the calliper, however, after a clean up, and all looking ok, I reused it all...

My experience is that the this problem is worse on the C5 than either the Xantia or BX's - Both our C5's had to be done at 4 years old and about 60,000 miles - I've never had that problem on a BX or Xantia anywhere near that early. I managed to unscrew the bolts out of the caliper with an air spanner and then drilled out the remaining locktite - anybody have any idea why Citroen think its nessecary to glue the bolts in?

Think about it ,place caliper on arm pick up bolt, dip threaded end in loctite feed bolt through caliper and tighten ergo thread lock all the way down the bolt easy Of course one could apply loctite to the female end but that is a lot more time consuming and we all know time is moneyDuracell wrote:My experience is that the this problem is worse on the C5 than either the Xantia or BX's - Both our C5's had to be done at 4 years old and about 60,000 miles - I've never had that problem on a BX or Xantia anywhere near that early. Its more sinister than that - the correct proceedure is to insert and tighten bolt and then inject the correct loktite product (can't remember which one it is) through an access hole provided in the caliper - the idea is to fill any free space between the unthreaded part of the bolt and the caliper and 'glue' it in. This method of fixing the rear caliper bolts is not found on all C5's - unfortunatley it applied to both of mine

Just the opposite for me. The Xantia needing doing at an early age but so far no sign on the C5 - and coming up for 6.Duracell wrote: problem is worse on the C5 than either the Xantia or BX's - Both our C5's had to be done at 4 years old

Flipping 'eck Clogzz - that's a clean floor and tools you have there.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

At 10 years old, mine's just about showing the fisrt signs on the o/s caliper only (must get it done before it gets too bad).
I understand that Citroen's recommended procedure is to apply gasket compound to the mating faces on assembly to prevent the bimetallic corrosion. Perhaps the difference of severity between our cars depends on how well this was done in the factory.
