'93 Xantia TD help needed

Post by colski »

My 1993 Citroen Xantia 1.9td is not running very well. When the engine is cold there is a annoying squeal at tick over, it goes once you pull away, but when you pull up at a junction and press the clutch down the squealing noise comes back.
Once the engine has fully warmed up the noise completely goes, however it does feel 'lumpy' at tick over.

I understand its difficult to diagnose these problems without hearing them, but wondered if anyone had any ideas what they could be.

Thanks

Aux Belt slighty loose, but not enough to slip fully.

Being 1993, I assume no Air Con, so thats a completely manual belt tensioner, if the belt has stretched slightly this can cause it...

Lifting the revs can cause it to go away... My 94 TD is dooing this at the moment... but its too wet to get under the wheel arch!

also the glowplugs being on for a while after you start it, will slow the alternator down..causing the squeel

opening the throttle will switch the glows off and the load is removed from alternator :) maybe when you pull away etc..

Ok, so looks like its either the aux belt or alternator, thats very helpful thankyou, and no, it has no Air Con Paul.

Any idea's what the 'lumpy' tick over could be? This only happens when the engine is warm. It doesn't have a nice continuous clatter that a diesel should have, instead it sounds er....lumpy? Sorry its hard to describe!

Thanks

sorry Colski I meant the belt is loose, but likely to be 'shown up' by the alternator asking too much of it.. tighten or change belt I would say for starters..

also got this problem on a 306 TD I need to see to .. :D

A squeal immediately on cold start, can also be a damper pulley slipping on its hub. Making a pair of "match marks" with white-out is an easy test for this.
