You can take the intake pipe off it and spin the compressor to ensure it hasn't seized. Should spin freely.

Disconnect the air intake pipe from the manifold, when you rev the engine you should have a strong draught from the pipe.

Get a turbo boost gauge and temporarily plumb it into the small pipework on top of the intercooler.

Use a long silicone pipe and mount the gauge in the car with the window slightly open to let the pipe through.

On the 2.2 Hdi you should get 1.1 bar at 2000 rpm and 1.2 bar at 3000 rpm.

Well turbo was broken, now a new one fitted.
Bearings had given up the ghost.

Sorry to hear your having trouble
Is that the new bearings have given up? if so there is an oil feed issue, the turbo wasnt primed before fitting or it was not ballanced and broke through the oil film the main shaft is suspended on.

On my 2.2 Hdi, I've just had a boost gauge connected as above and at 70 mph in 4th gear up a long hill on a dual carriageway I got just over 1.1 bar. Peaking very briefly at approx 1.2 bar.
