rear curly brake pipes

Post by citronut »

i was at the MOT station on the ramp with my old banger XANT estate,

they hed a real beet up N reg XANT on the other ramp oposite, they were going to fit a new rear curly brake pipe (4885.E1), turns out they had been supplied the oposite side (wrong one),

so the boss said to me an offer, i said a fiver, he laughted and said your joking they cost around £40 quid,  ,

i just checked on service incl VAT £51.15 each side

i check for the same pipe on a BX one is £12ish the other is £15ish,

what a rip off

Ahh but Malcolm...

The Xantia ones are like the finest Cuban cigars...

They're rolled on a virgin's thigh and hence the cost.

You pays yer money...

Its interesting to read that as I would of assumed now they would want more money for the BX ones (even though they were not really expensive when they were in production)

I'm thinking here about the way some 205 parts have increased in price (certainly from what I can tell, £70 odd for < 92 XUD water pump anyone?) as stocks diminish. And no doubt they would like you to buy a new car*

*I would consider newer if they were not multiplexed (and no C1 please)

Buy some pipe and a flaring tool from Plaeides and after the first one you can make them for a fraction of that.

You can usually find something about the right size to wind them round, I think I used a piece of plastic waste pipe.

Having changed these on an anti-sink Xantia you would be bonkers to buy the steel ones (quite apart from the cost  ) Getting them in is bad enough with nice flexible kunifer - with solid steel it would probably be easier to remove the rear subframe....
