HGF...

Post by Xantia2.0 »

Well the big Citroen is pretty much dead...

Turns out that loss of coolant was due to the head gasket.

How am I sure ?

Coolant has completely disappeared from the reservior, oil has gone watery and looks like chocolate milkshake, white smoke pours out the exhaust and it barely idles and misfires badly.

I have recently invested in an '02 Saab 9-5 2.2 TiD so I still have an economical powerful saloon to drive, however I do miss the Xant's 2.0 high RPM power :(

Oh well, in a few weeks she'll be back on the road. Though it is going to be a hell of a job to fix, considering I kept driving it with 40% anti-freeze in the oil before I realised...

So possibly the whole engine will need to come out and get rebuilt. First of all though I'll change the gaskets and spark plugs then see if she runs alright, if not, the engine's coming out!
1998 Citroen Xantia 2.0 16V I4 with 148,200 miles on the clock. Bought it with 123,000.

Drain coolant, whip head off.

Get it checked to ensure the valves are OK and its straight.

New headgasket + new timing belt + waterpump + tensioners

Re-assembly is the reverse or removal*

Drain + refill oil before starting ideally too.

I'm assuming it was not actually burning oil ? ie: rings. I have seen petrol XU's using oil at around 120 to 150k

Is this the car that was being made to run as cold as it possibly can to prolong the life of the engine!?

The way you're treating Xantia2.0 is reminiscent of other 'unfriendly' forums.

I've seen the same treatment in previous replies to posts from the same forum member and I must say that I feel very uncomfortable with the replies we see above.
