Xantia bottom door hinge problem

Post by Diabolical »

Passenger door on my s2 Xantia drops when opened, it seems to have rotted or something has come away behind the hinge.
I can't see a way of fixing it?
Removing door and wing will still not give me access to back of the hinge.
Has anybody else had this problem no what it is and did you sort it.

Because yours is an estate it's the failure seen many times on the Heuliez built
estate bodyshells. The hinge is breaking away from the door frame as the
welds originally holding the door didn't get enough zap of spotweld through
to hold the weight that cumulatively pulls the weight of the door off the car
over time. Rewelding is your only wsay forward and I believe access is OK
once the front wing is removed - will check my pictures as i took a reference
of an estate being broken recently and the wings and doors were removed.

As andmcit says, rewelding is the only solution. If you have a close look at the hinge
while door moves slowly to wide open position you would see a hairline crack there.
How do I know

I think it's always the front left and lower door hinge :( in an Estate which might fail.
Mine has been welded about 8 years ago and it worked fine so far.
I painted immediately over the welding area. Car paint code is on the bulkhead (front right corner).

I had the wing of my xantia yesterday and i think you would have good access to the hinge, that should be the easier wing too only took me about 20 mins to get my drivers side wing off, so passenger should be even quicker !!! :D

Thanks for reply's I shall take to my mate at the garage and see what he can do.

I don't weld but thinking of doing night classes to learn, Xantia 12 years old is my newest motor so would make sense.

Thanks again

There is a thicker panel - about 2mm - behind the pressed "skin". Weld is supposed to fully connect the two, fusing it all together.

A temporary (until you get to the garage, but not really practical for use) repair is to drill and fix through the hinge plate centre. This preserves correct alignment.

I have had the RHF door and LHR fail; the RHR is next but doesn't get a lot of use - only teensy cracks so far.
