Not so, thats the problem.
There are various different makes fitted to the Xantia, the one on mine is a Mitsubishi.
I need a new brush pack but without the starter reference no one will help me. The label on mine has disappeared. Obviously I can't remove the starter to show a supplier as I can't then use the car to get there !
I would really appreciate any help with this.

Can you not just fit a whole replacment starter?

Ok, a fair point, Im used to having TONS of spares - in which I just swap the whole lot.. in your case, its no brainer ... Scrap yard? Or is that a Scrap yard price?

Many thanks, that does help as I can go through a parts book at the local auto electrics place and hopefully match up against mine :)

Why oh why do they have to have so many options though

Paul,

£70 is a new unit price, scrappy option is a non starter for me, they are rare in my area and from past experience non of them tend to have Citroen bits. Also, it's a bit of a lottery with things like starter motors.

If only the label was still on the starter, I could have had the new part in a jiffy !!

Starter motor might have a cold stamp on the body.
I found out product code of mine with the aid of a digital camera 8-)

Now I know that it is a Bosch model (from their website--> 1.4kW and it has 9 tooth).
So starter motors can be different :)
I don't know much about diesel models but I guess they have more powerful starter motors.

RichardW has sent a very good list indeed.

Edit: Rather than sending a new post I'm editing this one.

I found this picture of the starter motor which I had taken long time ago.
It seems that text and numbers are printed (paint) rather than a cold stamp.
Type code is clearly seen even in the resized pic.
