Oh oh, there's a problem, I thought, so I took the top off the pump and the only thing that seemed to be wrong was the light spring which (I presume) is supposed to tension the plate against the chunky bit that moves the plate: sorry, but I don't have a pump parts manual to hand so can't tell you what the bits are actually called. Those of you who have seen the inside of the Lucas CAV pump will know what I mean.
This spring wasn't tensioning anything and seemed to be less than half the length it should be (it was about 1cm long) and some of the coils were on top of each other.
Is that spring supposed to tension the plate?
The car goes fine and doesn't stall when I pull up now, anyway...
