Xantia 2.0i 16v idle problems
Hi all
SWMBO informs me that my (her) VSX is doing the random revs shuffle at idle
I have had experience of this on a Veccy and it was the ICV.This could be taken apart and cleaned but i have no idea where to look for said component on the VSX
First off where is it located on the 2.0 16v Xantia
Secondly is it cleanable as a test to see if this is the problem or is it worth just getting a new one
Colin

i dont know where it is exactly on a 2.0lt, but it is usualy on the throtle body or inlet manifol, and is a cylindrical device about 2inch's in length by around an inch in diamiter, also its usualy black,
i find they will clean by removeing them and blast them out with carb cleaner,
then it will usualy last long enough to determine if it is that at fault,
then when it die's buy a new one from the likes of fuel parts

It's fixed with two torx screws (T20 key), one of them is marked with arrow in above pic.
I have always removed air filter box which makes ICV removal much easier and also
you can reach the lower screw better then.
I use brake cleaner to clean it.admiral51 wrote:... is it cleanable... Colin
Try cleaning it first. If it doesn't help then you can buy a new one.
Also spray some cleaner here, into the cavity -->
You can see ICV pictures and prices from ebay:
motors-parts.shop.ebay.co.uk and try with search words "Xantia idle"

I've had this issue on a 1.8 16v Xant.
Mounted in a slightly different place but same thing. Removed it for cleaning and when re-fitted it wouldn't idle at all.
New part ordered ( I went to a dealer for it but any half decent car spares dealer should have one), fitted it and problem solved.
Citroen called it an idle stepper motor from what i remember of it and it came with 2 new screws as you'll find one sure as hell goes missing when it falls to the bottom cowlings when you remove it!!

when removeing then refitting the ISM i was told you have to turn the ignition on and off 2 to 3 times to get it to reset itself,
in my experiance after cleaning they dont last long, but usualy long enough (maybe a few days or so ) to proove it is the fault, as they dont like solvent up them

The ebay link you have given shows a part which is different than mine (MK2 Xantia).
I have added location pictures from MK2 petrol Xantia. (I must edit those pics.)
Looking at your VIN number, I think your car is MK1 because engine code is not included.
So the idle motor in the ebay link might be the correct one for your car. No idea
It's rather expensive

admiral51 I've logged in service pages and entered your VIN number.
I got exactly the same picture as in my car !
Thats' good news because in that case you'll not pay so much for the idle motor
Check it from service pages like this:
-Login and enter your VIN number and press OK.
- From left side find Job and --> click on Mechanical
- From right side find Engine section and click on air and fuel supply
- You'll get links below for document pages
- (Lower part of the window) click on INTAKE MANIFOLD AIR DISTRIBUTOR link
- The part number is 11 in the pic. Part 12 O-ring also belongs to it.
You can find from ebay --> ebay: Xantia +idle

I bought a new genuine one when chasing a problem in the pre-Lexia era.
Manufactured quality has dropped; while the same maker they are visibly lighter in construction (and, one assumes, durability).
Before changing it I would urge real-time data viewing on the Lexia. Idle stepper on an XU10J4 should be around 30-40 steps with aircon running and a warm motor. If it's well under look for either a blocked exhaust or leaky intake.

Having a similar problem on my 1.8 16v Xantia. recently started hunting for power. Took it out this morning and was close to dying on the A3 @ 50mph in 5th gear.
Coil pack was changed 10,000 miles ago, fuel filter 1,000 miles ago. Rear exhaust box 500 miles ago and just sailed through MOT.
Idle stepper motor not been changed or serviced.
Looking at the forum posts I wondered if the strainer in the tank might be blocked. ?
