Best way is to remove that crap from the exhaust altogether then you will never have these problems and expence again as i did with mine.monkfish wrote:hi guys whars the best way to force regen the fap on a c5 2.2 hdi

Not just a forced regen, because I'm not sure that you can get enough revs in top within legal speed limits to force a regen, better to give it a good thrash in third up an incline if possiblemyglaren wrote:Best thing is to get it to auto-regenerate while driving, a good long run at a decent speed will do it.
Forced regeneration is rather brutal.
Mind this is just my thoughts on the situation never having had to do it.

That crap is a legal requirement in much of Europe and likely will be here before much longer so best get used to the idea.woodywoodpecker wrote:Best way is to remove that crap from the exhaust altogether then you will never have these problems and expence again as i did with mine.monkfish wrote:hi guys whars the best way to force regen the fap on a c5 2.2 hdi

I did a forced regen on a C5 recently, its quite strange to see an engine rev up and stay there just by pressing a button on the Lexia, after a few minutes the engine returns to idle then runs at a lower speed of around 2500 rpm for a while then its all done, the exhaust gases are very hot indeed during the regen.

Not sure but based upon a couple of journeys recently about 10% a 100% of the time and about 80% 95% of the time and a about 5% 0% of the time but then that 5% probably don't have a license to loose anyway.woodywoodpecker wrote:cachaciero wrote:

I think you should know my car flew through the mot test without that and i'll say again crap in the exhaust. Also no visible black smoke coming out of my exhaust eithercachaciero wrote:woodywoodpecker wrote:Not sure but based upon a couple of journeys recently about 10% a 100% of the time and about 80% 95% of the time and a about 5% 0% of the time but then that 5% probably don't have a license to loose anyway.cachaciero wrote:

Can you point to where it is a legal requirement?cachaciero wrote:That crap is a legal requirement in much of Europe and likely will be here before much longer so best get used to the idea.woodywoodpecker wrote:Best way is to remove that crap from the exhaust altogether then you will never have these problems and expence again as i did with mine.monkfish wrote:hi guys whars the best way to force regen the fap on a c5 2.2 hdi
It's not a legal requirement in the UK, and never will be for any vehicle currently fitted with it. Any legal requirement will only apply to new vehicles.
The current systems are expensive to maintain and faults with them have resulted in cars being scrapped. What's worse for the environment? Scrapping or running without a FAP?
It's catalytic converters all over again, cars fitted with them before they were legally required could have them removed, and I imagine any surviving examples have been de-catted since the cost of the early cats was astronomical.

Re: forc regened
FAPS per se are not specifically a legal requirement anywhere as far as my limited research goes BUT compliance with overall emission standards are. So and this again is my understanding of the standards in Europe all cars from 2010 have to meet Euro IV standards and from 2012 Euro V (originally 2008 and 2010 respectively) Both these standards cannot be achieved on a diesel vehicle without a FAP.Homer wrote:

Would it be illegal to remove the FAP on these cars? probably at least in the U.K where cars are taxed according to their emissions.
I would imagine that HMRC would take a dim view of making the car non compliant with the band at which it was being taxed.
Also and in this I may be wrong it would likely fail the MOT as the emmision test would be based upon whichever emission spec the car was certified to.
Finally the following is food for thought, HGV's today, passenger cars tomorrow? :-"An article in British magazine ‘Commercial Motor’ says that due to the shortage of used Euro IV trucks, a number of operators that regularly take loads into London are planning to acquire late-registered Euro III vehicles and equip them with a suitable particulate filter so as to be able to enter London's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) from 3 January 2012, when trucks will have to meet the Euro IV particulates standard."
Parts of the US have similar stringent emission regs where a FAP(DPF) is required to meet them.
India and Japan also, and in both these countries they have introduced legislation to retrofit DPF systems for some classes of vehicles notably heavy lorrys buses etc.
You are correct there is no current legal requirement for a C5 1 or 2 to meet more than Euro 3 which it can do without a FAP, however as has been shown local authorities can demand that vehicles entering their jurisdictions meet higher standards. e.g if London was to enforce Euro 4 standards for light cars entering the LEZ then to take your C5 into this area it would require a FAP.It's not a legal requirement in the UK, and never will be for any vehicle currently fitted with it. Any legal requirement will only apply to new vehicles.
I cannot argue against the sentiments. However the whole ethos in the motor manufacturing industry is to make a car which has a nominal four year life or 60K whichever comes first The FAP will last a nominal four years or 60K so from their perspective wheres the problem? The current systems are expensive to maintain and faults with them have resulted in cars being scrapped. What's worse for the environment? Scrapping or running without a FAP?
It does seem to me that in respect of the FAP system replacement the motorist is being screwed over by every body from the manufacturer down but then as said from the manufacturers point of view he would rather the car be scrapped and on the C5 if not the FAP there are several other expensive items that will likely fail at around this point.
Given the amount of energy and raw materials that go into the manufacture of a car it is nothing but a waste boardering on the criminal and IMHO goverment action to force manufacturers to build cars with a useful life of ten years is long overdue
Again I agree interestingly I suspect that with modern technology petrol engines could achieve required emission levels without a CAT and I have always suspected that the hasty introduction of CATS was done to serve the interests of particular large American corporation who had made substantial investments in the technology and could see it being made obsolete by advances in control technology.
It's catalytic converters all over again, cars fitted with them before they were legally required could have them removed, and I imagine any surviving examples have been de-catted since the cost of the early cats was astronomical.
I will close this by saying that I personally am in favour of the introduction of legislation which has reduced the amount of particulate matter emitted by diesel engines. Up to now this has really only affected big engines i.e Trucks Buses etc but the improvment in air quality in big citys as a result of this is well worth having.
Therefore to oppose the imposition of of a similar system on my own car (or any other car) would be hypocritical.
However there is a caveat if the fitment of such a system means that I have to burn 10% more fuel with the resultant increase in carbon emission then one does have to ask the question is it worth continuing with it on environmental grounds, in my case the potential high cost of repair (replacement of Eolys Tank) only adds to the pressure to junk it.

Whats wrong with removeing the FAP and Stema cleaning it out - and there you have a fresh new one!!
Even my Dealer told me thats what they do!! I think the FAP hype is far far to high, and they are not as complex as we hear they are!
I do hear though, that they do make a car have higher MPG! Hence the appaling 2.2 HDi mpg figures, compared to say the 2.0 8v hdi or even the older 2.1 12v XUD engines, of which is not fitted with Cats (Untill 1997) or FAP's
Paul
**EDIT: Opppps LOWER MPG, thanks cachaciero

I think you mean Lower MPG
My estimate based upon all that I have read is that removing the FAP and CAT on mine would turn a 40MPG motorway trip into a near 47 MPG trip. Having said that what I really want to do is to improve the 29/30 MPG urban figure into 39/40 and it is not clear to me that removing the FAP will give that level of improvement though it will undoubtedly give some.
I would also say that I think that a lot of 2.2's have poor consumption because of problems in the auto box system note system not the box itself, driven "manually" MPG figures close to a proper manual can be achieved.
