Gearbox change

Quick question guys

My gearbox struggles in 4th gear at low speeds so i have to use 3rd a lot more until the revs are quite high and the gears are loose enough anyway

Iv had a look on ebay and theres a few for under a hundred quid so the only thing now is how easy is it to change over the gearbox ?

pretty easy Dave, I have managed between 3-5 hours depending...

Eh? Not sure what you are getting at Dave.... A 1.9TD needs to be above 2k rpm before anything happens, and it doesn't really get into its (turbo) stride till above 2.5k rpm. If you are trying to lug 4th below 30mph it will seem to struggle....

What it is..is it sounds like a loud grinding noise and a clattering,its hard to describe but it doesnt sound very healthy

The mechanic i left it in to about a month ago said that the box was knackered but i didnt enquire any further unfortunately

what do you call a low speed Dave, not many citroen's like being driven at 30mph in 4th gear,

although they still wouldn't make the sort of noise you are reportting

When you fit another gearbox, you'll want to check the 2 output shaft seals for wear. Some would renew them as a matter of course. And you'll be able to check the clutch out at same time.

My TD is happy trickling along in 4th at 30mph, although there's not a lot of grunt/torque if you want to then accelerate hard. In fact, on the level, at a constant 30-35, I'll often use 5th

agree with Martin.. since i (with help) have got my TD back to normal power levels, I am suprised how wel lit behaves in 5th at 30..

i was always tought to always try to keep some reserve grunt and use engine brakeing,
