Brake pads

Post by Xantia2.0 »

As you know, my Xantia needs new front brake pads, so I was wondering what the best ones to get would be. I am very tempted to buy these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CITROEN-XANTIA-19 ... 518c76957c

Would they be good for the Xantia and what would the benefits be compared to a cheap set like these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CITROEN-XANTIA-FR ... 3a5d85c4db ?

Also would I be better going to my Citroén dealership and getting proper ones ? If so how much would they cost ?

Personally I take the view that the lives of my loved ones and me depend on primarily on tyres and brakes so I never compromise on either. I don't mean that I buy the most expensive, simply good quality from a reputable source (so I can be reasonably sure the parts are genuine).

It's vital to check that your car is fitted with the 'standard' discs and pads. There are stories that Citroen and Hueliez (who built the Estates) did fit larger discs/calipers to some cars - perhaps due to temporary parts shortages.

GSF list prices are from £21 to £27 (+VAT) depending on model - a good basis for comparison.

Try your local motor factor too. EBC must be about the only supplier to observe the 'requirement' about not reselling pads - it's not rare for workshops to return pads to supplies because they are wrong (or there are a number of possibilities).

OK, do brake pads age ? As my friend just found a pack of 4 genuine Citroén brake pads for an Xantia that are from 2001. The box has never been opened. He only wants £5 for them so I'm very tempted to just fit them and see! But if somebody can tell me if they'll be fine that would be great! :)

It would be quite hard to send you the number of the pads, as the box has gotten wet at some point and all the ink ran, however I checked the receipts and in 1999 the first owner had the disks changed to original ones. Plus, if they are not the right size it will be visable. I am going out to view a Porsche 944 (yes I know mad isn't it) in half an hour so I'll fit them when I get back (with or without Porsche ?)

I did, they were all fine. When I took the wheels off though I noticed the disks were BADLY scored and had a lip. Looks like either those old pads were left on for too long, or the previous owner used the previous pads till they were metal-on-metal.

Either way replaced the disks then put pads on. Brake light went out right away and it brakes nice and firm now :)
