C5 Hesitation.

Recently bought a 56 plate 1.6 HDI C5 with 90k miles on the clock and sometimes get a problem with 'Hesitation' for want of a better word.

The car will loose power for about half a second and then back to normal.
This has happened about 6 times over a month / 1000 miles.

Seems to happen at no particular time. I has happened when gently driving along but most noticeable under brisk acceleration when it feels like a jolt.

Changed the fuel filter last week but it happened again.

Other than that, it seems a bit slow on the uptake compared to my old Xantia 1.9TD.

Does anyone have a suggestion about what the cause could be?

Try a fuel system cleaning solution because, at that mileage, you may have 'dirty' injectors which will affect fuel rail pressure and injection.

Commer Diesel Magic is worth a go at £6 from Halfrawds. Add the whole bottle when you're down to about a quarter tank of fuel.

The next favorite is air flow metre (known as MAF). If the diesel flush doesn't have any affect then look for a new MAF from say GSF.

A few sources describe that a MAF is only good for 50K miles. At 90k you could be well overdue for a fresh MAF.

If not MAF then EGR valve.
The type fitted to the 1.6 HDi tend not to be any better after cleaning, so it may have to be a complete new one.
Its a Valeo part.

I had mine replaced because old was very black and the car logged an egr fault. It worked for a few weeks then went back to hesitation.
I'm waiting for a price from my brother for a replacement MAF as we knew it had to be one or the other. Not sure why it worked for a few weeks though.

Similar problem

MY other C5 suffered a lack of power too as has been discussed on here log agao. My other half is desperate to get it sorted. The enegine management light is on and it chugs sometime which someone told me meant it had gone down to 3 cyclinders. Problem is is that is is not constant.

I think its the injectors. If I take to garage how would I go about it? What do I need to say and how do I avoid huge costs trying to verify this?

Testing the injectors is around £20 per, then comes the cost of refurbishment or replacement. Mine was £100 to refurbish (just the one) and they cost around £250 new.

A Delphi of Bosch centre should be equipped to test and refurbish but there are other independent diesel specialists that can do it.

If your getting a MAF for it only buy a genuine Citroen unit, aftermarket units are not alsways as good.

I had one on a 2.0HDi C5, brand new aftermarket but the car just would not perform, very slow and using lots of fuel. I got a new genuine MAF and it restored the car back to how it should have been.

Our 2.0HDi 16v is hesitating at the moment, mainly when pulling away, which proved very dangerous last week when trying to get out infront of an artic!

Lexia says its the EGR, have you had your cars codes read?
