"98 Xantia 1.9 TD Estate radiator - which one? Help ple

Post by Malcolm »

Hopefully will be in France in two weeks, but just noticed damp on radiator on RH side viewing from front. When fan on water drops being blown through. Should be ample time to fit new radiator around work.

Looking on GSF there are RP numbers which I'm not familiar with.

i.e.: -

173PC0250 RADIATOR XANTIA 1.9 TD >RP 7482 76.00
173PC0260 RADIATOR XANTIA 2.1TD; XAN 1.9TD RP 7483> 106.00

EYCMR is the date stamp on bulk head.

Anyone any clue as to which is for my Xantia and are there any tips on removal/fitting.

Thanks
Malc

I would think it depends on whether yours is a 1.9 or 2.1

EYCMR is your paint code isn't it?

Your RP number should be near by.

1.9TD SX Xantia Hatchback (Jenny) running on 100% veg for sale

With your VIN number, the Citroen Service web site should clarify things.

You'll need the later/more expensive one on a '98 car.

This one:

173PC0260 RADIATOR XANTIA 2.1TD; XAN 1.9TD RP 7483> 106.00

The difference is in the connectors. the earlier one up to RP7483 (May 1997) used conventional connector and later oners used the bayonet connectors.

Yours will be the latter. easy to tell, if the hoses plug into sockets on the radiator and there are no hose clips evident, you have the later type.

The RP number can be decoded to give an exact build date of your car. That is all it is, a build date code.

The RP number on cars up to about 1999 is stencilled in yellow near the paint code. It typically ends in CJ. e.g. 7262CJ.

On later cars, the RP number is on a label in the drivers side A pillar near the tyre pressure information label.

Same format except that it's often preceded by two zeros. e.g. 008293CJ

CJ has no relevance so far as I can tell.

The RP number is often vital to ensure the right spares are obtained but is not 100% to be trusted in all circumstances. For example:

My Activa for instance is RP7262 (late September 1996) but has the later radiator, as all 2.1TDs and Activas did. maybe, but I'm not sure, 1.9TDs may not have received the new type radiator until may 1997.

Always a good idea to ask if you're not sure

Jim,

just been out with torch. Pipe from expansion tank has a spring clip on near side top of radiator. Top hose does appear to be some connector secured by wire clip to off side top of rad and same side but lower a spring clip holds smaller bottom hose. Drain valve is 3 inches lower. Does that confirm later radiator?

Hi Malcolm,

yes, that a positive ID on the later radiator. The smaller lower bottom hose is not the actual bottom hose but the oil cooler return. The true bottom hose goes in right at the bottom and has the same bayonet arrangement as the top hose.

It can be a bit of a devil to reach and separate. Often you need to carefully break the radiator socket to be able to get the bottom hose bayonet out without damaging it. Better to sacrifice a duff radiator than an expensive hose...

Jim is right - the bottom hose can be a nightmare to get out. Be careful with the hose...bust it and you'll be at the Citroen dealer and the car will be off the road while you wait for it to arrive.

I did just this with my Xsara a few years back, not a good week. As Jim says, if it's stuck, break the radiator.

2007 Honda FRV diesel

Picked up the more expensive radiator - as advised. Just opened box to start job and ........... NOT the bayonet connect type. Been onto GSF and it would appear that the box has the correct number on but the contents are incorrect. John at GSF did agree that from the diagrams he had, it was boxed incorrectly. Tuesday now before I can get a replacement.
