Post by skinhead »

My 2003 C5 2.2 HDI has clocked up 80K & pads need replacing on front,But I noticed the discs have quite a ridge round the edge. Can any one tell me what the disc min thickness should be??

If the discs are looking a bit thin and have a lip id just replace them, they are not that expensive. Chances are if they look a bit thin and worn now, they are not going to last the next 38K on the new pads.

On yours - 26mm. Don't forget, when the pistons are pushed in turn anticlockwise for the right; clockwise for left and it's easier if the bleed valve is open. (If sucking+eggs+grannys applies - sorry)

Just got mine changed last week with pads. £220.

They never check back so may need these done too? Not sure.

I had bought pads fro c5 but the garage said they were wrong. C5 LX hdi 110 was the model I ordered for but...
C'est pas possible!

When I had mine done George was most apologetic when I collected it as the discs & pads were more expensive than he had expected. The brakes on the estate are apparently the same as the V6 and bigger, beefier and naturally cost more.

The difference was pretty insignificant as a proportion of the total cost though, which was a bit less than you paid Chris.

My C5 has the same 288mm front brake discs as the V6, Haynes and quite a few brake catalogues said it should only have 283mm discs. The bigger discs are expensive, rather more expensive than the smaller ones!

When I eventually bought the front discs, the label on the box said they'd fit the C5 but as well as that they'd fit a Xantia too... If the 288mm C5 and Xantia discs are the same that might mean that if you buy them for a Xantia they'll be cheaper than for the C5...

I think all C5s use the same brakes, well the brakes of our C5s all look the same, but ive not measured them

I cant remember how much mine were now, pretty sure it was around £80-£90 for the discs and pads. They are a good make, TSW discs and Mintex pads. I fitted mine myself.

No, as Kowalski says, the HDis use the same (bigger) front discs as the V6.

As with the Xantia, the brake part catalogues list 3 different sizes of front brake discs, 266, 283 and 288. While the 288mm discs seem to be the same as those fitted to the Xantia, the 266mm and 283mm discs are thicker and are definately not interchangable. The rear discs are 276mm which are bigger than the Xantia rear discs, so if you have 266mm discs on the front your rear discs will actually be bigger than your fronts which is odd.

i did my disks and pads a few weeks ago, they cost me about €100 and i fitted them myself, when i bought the car it had new pads but within a few they started squeeling and squeeking with foot on brake or not, the disks were at their limit with a big lip and they started to stay on a bit when they heated up, i decided to change them when i had to brake hard and the were stuck on for the rest of my journey, i could smell them coming in the window and through the vents, they were free when the cooled but well past their best
i have a far better pedal now and braking response and no squeeling, and i a bit better mpg too.

I don't know how good Brembo rate for their brake discs but they list the following for the C5 2.0HDI at 283mm not 288....

There are 3 different 2.0 HDI engines, with 90, 110 and 136 bhp respectively, the first two may have the 283mm discs but mine being the 136bhp model comes with the 288mm discs.
