Replaced hdi crankshaft pulley, still got a knocking noise.

Post by Goingnuts » 15 Aug 2010, 17:06

I've recently changed the crankshaft pulley on my 1.4 hdi as I assumed that with it being a common fault, it must be the cause of the knocking sound. However, after doing so, i've still got the same rattle/knocking noise.

the cambelt and tensioner were also replaced too, as well as the auxillary belt and tensioner.

Any idea's on what could be the cause?

Car has covered 83k and not long ago had an oil change.

What kind of knocking noise ? , I assume it increases with engine speed ?

Remove the ancillary drive belt and run the engine (just for a few seconds) without that.

To determine if its something related to that (bearings etc in a component driven by that)

I'd say the knocking noise if very much like an old transit diesel, it increases with speed. Sometimes on a run it goes very quiet, Also on some occasions it seems a lot noisier when first used and under load. (Going up a steep hill)

That sounds more like an injector problem by your description.

It would be worth finding a member near you with a Lexia / Planet and plugging it in to see if any fault codes are stored.
