Black/dark grey smoke upon accellerating? Diesel

Post by HDI Dave »

What's the main cause of smoking on accellerating?

My HDI's done it since I got it,around 18 months ago.

Serviced it - filters, oil etc 6000miles ago...can't be nackered already?!

Only noticed as I've seen smoke before, accellerating, thought,it don't look that bad, then it looked worse, dark cloud  so I back off usually,

then t'other day, my daughter and her younger brother were following me,and a middle lane hogger, (doing 36 mph ish in a 40, 3 lane, why do they do that  ) miffed me a bit so I booted it (a bit, I thought,no smoke in my mirror).. and my young teenage lad says, wow,You were proper booting it,black smoke coming out (I saw none,in the rear view..)

180,000 miles on the engine,(mainly motorway),runs great, and doesn't use any oil.Only used as a commuter though.

Think a good motorway thrash would clear it out?
or any other ideas welcomed :)

A fuel additive, such as Millers Diesel Sport 4 could be worth a try. Recommended dose is something like 1 measure to 20 litres of fuel, and they recommend doubling the dose for a good 'blow-through'. I used to add three or four times the dose prior to an MOT (same engine as yours), it claims to reduce emissions and smoke considerably.
Try their website (Millersoils.co.uk).
