Anyone had this happen? (Crank pulley)

Post by HDI Dave »

Hi all,
Here's my crankshaft pulley I got from the bay, about a 1000 miles ago:

And here it is now, after a quick looksee to investigate a noise..not sure if it's coming from the pulley, might just be paranoid, then the car nearly fell on me so I'll investigate further later.
It's growing its own fungi

Think it's breaking up? Surely GSF's a good make/supplier..or is it normal!

The white stuff just pulls off and feels like those old polystyrene ceiling tile things.Very strange.
Any ideas chaps?

Tell me about it

Changed the crank pulley on the V6 recently, the rubber sandwich had given up and was slipping and squealing, but didn't have anything like that in your pic, wouldn't have known by just looking at it. Forked out and got an original Citroen item though, obviously been modified as it was of different construction to the one I took off.

GSF are a substantial UK motor factor with a good reputation to protect, so why don't you (politely) ask them if this is what you should expect?

Don't forget that you'll need a new crankshaft bolt if you do replace the pulley.

^^^ Aye, I suppose I could send them a picture couldn't I.
If it's faulty they'd surely send me another one? or my local GSF's only down the road.

New bolt?
I just re used the old one! Can't see the bolt affecting the actual pulley?

Should've gone to Citroen ideally, but cars + stealers = £££££, and surely GSF have sold a fair few of these which should be fit for purpous.

Might be summat and nowt, maybe just a temporary protective coating between the sandwich thinggy, who knows!

I'll see how it goes, I think I've a 12 month guarantee, just be a minor b@ll@che to change it again.. Oh well, c'est la vie :P

Malcolm,

I got it off ebay, it was cheaper than my local GSF!!!

(maybe they get rid of all the duff/old stock rubbish cheaper on the bay?)

That does look worrying Dave, it looks like the bonding adhesive is shedding. Paint a line right across the pulley and see if the two halves move relative to each other. If it does, it's toast.

I've got a fine-tipped paint pen that is excellent for the task.

I'm sure GSF will be very good about it if it has indeed thrown in the towel..

Yep, 'tis true. Citroens love attention. Definitely female cars

Hmm,bonding adhesive. Sounds very feasable  I'll do your paint line tip and check it in a few days, see if there's any movement,

If mine's thrown in the towel, wouldn't the whole ebay batch be faulty?

I think I'll chuck an email + pics in to GSF in the meantime and see what they reckon.

Cheers, Dave.

If it slips as much as mine did you will only need one turn of the starter to see it move.
