Oil at the back of the engine.
Hi all its been a long time since my last post as the old girl has been well behaved, now comes the but!. I was having a look around the engine bay tonight and found a fair amount of oil at the back of the cylinder head cover! It’s a 2.1td and is still pulling very well never misses a beat and she only uses a very small amount of oil between changes (Every 6K miles). Could it be the cylinder head cover rubber seal leaking? It does not seem to be leaking now has anyone else come across this? Changing the oil tomorrow so will have a look out for anything out of the norm! Thanks for reading si.

Can be of only two places, well 3 on a 2.1
Rocker cover gasket, cam carrier spealing face, though rare Id thought, or Cam Shaft Seal behind Cam pully - so thats a belt and pully off job...
As the engine is tilted rearwards, the cam seal weeps the oil out and onto the back ofthe engine... you'll know if its rocker cover, as the inlet manifold will have oil pools were it meets the head.

Had a similar problem on my 1.9, was the rocker cover gasket, apparently a common problem. I had to use a little bit of loctite gasket seal to get it to seal properly, no problems now. Fortunately it was an easy job.

I cleaned all the surfaces thoroughly with a little bit of Gunk, then applied a small amount of gasket seal to the lip of the cover and the surface of the head all the way round. Been fine ever sincesdelasal wrote:ref ..."had to use a little bit of loctite gasket seal to get it to seal properly" ... i'd be intereted to hear wat you did exactly ..? Did you coat both sides of the rubber gasket and seal it both sides? Did you just do the part at the back? I have similar problem on 1,.9D engine Steve

Funnily enough...
I now own this car, and found this thread while looking for a guide on changing the cam cover gasket on a 2.1TD. Doesn't look an easy job with that inlet manifold being there, looks like the cam cover is put on before the inlet manfold is! The inlet plenum looks like it'll come off but leave just a little too much inlet manifold in place to be able to to get the cam cover off - anyone have any idea if that's right?
While changing the cambelt today and yesterday we found that the inside of the cambelt covers were clean, and that the oil on the outside of the cambelt covers starts just below the level of the cam cover, so I'm 99% sure that the gasket there is the issue. Priced one up on servicbox, a mere £24!!!
Can anyone get them cheaper??

Don't overlook the four push fit short rubber connectors between the over the engine air manifold and the four alloy intakes. They harden with age and allow leakage of pressurised oily air creating a mess on the back of the engine. I fitted four new rubbers + cable ties to solve this problem on my 2.1TD XM.

Can't remember the 2.1, but on the 1.9TD the trick is to move the cam cover to the side slightly so the cut out lines up with the manifold, then tilt it forward and lift it out.

I thought there would be a simpler explaination for this - thanks!kenhall1202 wrote:Don't overlook the four push fit short rubber connectors between the over the engine air manifold and the four alloy intakes. Just looked on servicebox and yep as you said there is a rubber between the inlet plenum bit over the engine and the actual intake manifold, and luckily they are (only..) about £5 each. I will see if I can get 4 of them and a cam cover gasket and do it all in one go, will try and get it to an MOT place first though to see if it fails on anything major!
And Xac, I need to have a faff with my 1.9TD 306 as well tomorrow, that seems to be leaking from the cam cover despite having a new gasket fitted by me about 12 months ago. Will try removing, cleaning, and refitting, and hope that'll sort it!
Cheers.

Not sure about the pug 1.9, but the Xantia one has a vacuum pump on the resevoir end of the cam, the o-ring in that can leak and give the impression it's coming from the cam cover.

EGR valve and fast idle.Dommo wrote:The pug does too - for the brakes I presume. What does the Xantia require a vacuum pump for? I'm sure my 1.9 doesnt have one...
Beside the lhm resevoir there's two electrovalves.
