Sounds like the CV joint is disintegrating and is locking up. Remove the bottom ball joint and the drive shaft nut, you should be able to swing the hub out far enough to pull the shaft out. The near side is the easiest to change, it has no centre bearing, it should just pull out, if not place a tyre lever between that and the diff housing and lever.
