You could probably adjust it but it might not actually cure your problem.
First things first, ensure the air filter is not really dirty, a clogged filter or restricted air intake pipe will cause black smoke.

I'd agree with both Andy and Tom, don't go fiddling with the pump until a good and proper full service has been carried out first.
In fact, if you don't understand exactly what you're doing and you have reasonable grounds to believe the pump has been tampered with, take it to a person with the required skills.
One adjustment in particular can kill your engine at MOT time or on a missed gear if incorrectly adjusted.
Pumps don't ever just go out of adjustment. Exclude every other possibility first.

on the top of the pump i presume there was at some time a tamperproof cap covering a lock nut and torq screw,it appears to have been messed with as the star shaped torq looks twisted, somebody has suggested it might need the pump setting up with a dti guage?

Ah the fun/smoke screw!littlelandie wrote:on the top of the pump i presume there was at some time a tamperproof cap covering a lock nut and torq screw,it appears to have been messed with as the star shaped torq looks twisted, somebody has suggested it might need the pump setting up with a dti guage?
13mm lock nut and a T27 torx.
If it's screwed down then it gives more oomph but more smoke.
