Exhaust on 1999 xsara westcoast + other problems!!!!!!!!

Post by d3xt0r »

1) Recently hit a big pot hole and exhuast snapped just before the back box (luckily as can replace cheaply) however i have put a exhaust join over the snap and tied it up with metal wire.

The car will run for say a 10 minute drive then go very sluggish and start jerking and miss fireing. could this be because the exhaust it hanging lower than it should be as ive left it tied lower to allow some movement and could this be causing an air flow/pressure problem?

2) Fuel gauge constantly shows empty and below the red line. however sometimes it jumps up to were it should be albeit for 1 journey then next time i switch it on its off again.

Could this be a fuel sensor in the tank or the needle perhaps?

3) How easy and cheaply can i replace the central locking motor on the drivers door. looks awkward to get into.

4) Blowers seem to only blow warm air whether its on hot or cold.

Is this the air con or a relay somewere?

thanks guys

Kyle

Forgot to mention when it gets hot after about 10 mins of driving (i think due to exhaust problem) the car sometimes revs as if im sitting tapping the accelarator constantly then revs up to 3000 revs by its self :?:

checking the radiator immediately afterwards. the water is at the top instead of about 2 inches lower were it is before the car gets hot.

ANY IDEA'S PLEASE

cheers

Kyle

P.S dont buy cars of ebay LOL. gave it a good check before i got it but seems to be one thing after another now.

What sort of engine does this beast have?

The poor running is unlikely to be a direct result of the exhaust problem. Did this problem start at the same time?

This is identicle to mine, Its a 1.4 petrol engine.

Its only started to do this since the exhaust snapped. so im presuming its directly connected. maybe the exhaust is getting too much air or it is an air pressure issue due to the exhaust.

A mate who is a mechanic said it could be due to the exhaust.

he said the tapping of acceleration could be the auto idle something
and the revving up is the auto choke or something

I think that your engine problems are probably due to a faulty sensor, maybe the coolant temperature sensor, or the MAP/MAF sensor (whichever your engine has), or even the throttle sensor.

A broken exhaust should not affect the running of the engine, unless the brak is upstream on the lamda sensor (which is usually within a foot of the exhaust manifold).

You should try to get your car to a Lexia diagnostic machine. See the sticky thread for a Lexia near you.

The exaust is leaking around the oxygen sensor mounting, you can see the soot, this can cause fueling problems, there is no point in looking for a running fault until that is sealed. Try sealing it with some exaust putty for the time being to see if it helps your problem & take it from there. Did any of the wiring of the oxygen sensor get damaged when the exhaust dropped ?

thanks for pointing that out mate, ill get it sealed for now or could i weld it, if so what weld should i use as i know some metals are harder to weld but inevitably im going to have to replace the exhuast manifold bit but that can wait i suppose.

The wires are all fine.

Thanks for your help
